The shooting star seemed to know exactly when she wanted to go back to.

Scarlett stood once again by the peaceful lake, standing once again by the silent trees.  Her heart hammered in her chest.  This was the night that it happened.

She looked up at the sky- and there was that fateful star again, streaking through the sky. She stood rock-still as her heart sank. This is going to happen again. I can't relive this nightmare!

But... as if in slow motion, the glowing sphere, like a ball of white fire, whizzed past her.  Scarlett unconsciously turned around.

She watched it plunged into another girl, standing there in horror.

Scarlett gaped as the girl glowed, brighter and brighter, and collapsed on the ground. "No," she gasped. "No!"

"I wish... I wish..." The words died in her throat.  The shooting star wasn't in her any more.  She shook her head, staring at the girl lying on the ground, still as a statue.

And just like that, she vanished.

Scarlett fell to her knees as the sky seemed to grow darker.  This couldn't be happening again. This wasn't a shooting star. It was a curse, thrusting itself literally into its unsuspecting victims. An infinite loop. Going on and on, one person after another. Drain the will of life from them. All starting with a wish.
