Jack sat up, shrieking like a bat. This roused up all her companions, who sat up, gazing at the girl.
"Jack, are you okay?" Whitewash immediately asked, fixing the leather cap on his head.
Lace looked at Jack, yawning. "What the hay, dude? I just about rested my head!"
Jack widened her eyes, unable to understand. Then, she saw Whitewash's metatarsals, nice and whole. She took off her covers and gazed at her thigh, which was whole, then her shoulder, also whole. She looked out and, through the gap on the oak door, she saw it was still night.
She sighed. "It was a dream..." Likewise, that creeper she saw approaching Gigi was also just a dream.
Or was it?
-----
Gigi sat up, eyes wide, breathing hitched. Something crackled to the side, and she jerked her head there. There was a fireplace. She adjusted herself on the cozy bed she was on. She had many peculiar dreams before, and among them all, seeing herself and Brownie exiting the cave to land in a land with waterfalls and flowers and wonderful sunlight was the most peculiar and the most...desirable.
She looked at Brownie, smiling. The cow was asleep on the carpet. She wasn't sure if it was daytime already, but the gut feeling she supposed everyone had told her it was still night. She closed her eyes and slept.
-----
Jack's tears were uncontrollable. She was sobbing, Mart and Jace and Lace and Whitewash all comforting her, telling her it was just a dream, and that usually, what happens in real life is the opposite of a dream.
"I'm sorry...it was just too realistic..." Jack choked, burying her face in her blankets.
Whitewash sighed. "Jack, I don't see myself burning up and losing my feet anytime soon."
"And I wouldn't imagine Gigi dying pretty soon," Lace said, though he seemed unsure of what he just said. "And a creeper? Goodness, I'd sooner expect her to die from falling into a pit!"
The boys laughed to ease the situation, and slowly, Jack removed her blankets. She gently laughed as well, sniffling, accepting a paper Mart offered as tissue.
"Now go back to bed, Jack," said Jace.
A little later, Jack woke up again. She didn't have another dream. Sunlight went through the hole in the door. She smiled, stretching, before realizing her companions were already eating on the floor. Whitewash was already taking down the wood blocks that made up the walls.
"Morning, Jack," Jace greeted. "Better have your breakfast. We're leaving in a while."
Jack ate some cooked chicken, and later they helped Whitewash take down the house. Then, they went off to Cane River, following Mart's map. While walking, Mart carried a bucket.
"Your dream last night scared us, Jack," Lace said as they walked. "Your reaction's spooky. It's as if it was real."
"Considering we did just witness our village disappear," Mart said, "a nightmare like that isn't surprising. Hey look, a pond!"
They saw where he was pointing. He quickly went over to scoop water with his bucket, and they took turns drinking from it, though they considered it "unhygienic." All claimed it was the tastiest water they've ever had, though that's probably just because they're so thirsty.
