Chapter 1: What A Jerk!

I woke up, Sunday morning. It's 6:30 and the sun is barely up. I'm always an early riser unlike mom and dad. To them, waking up 10 in the morning is early. You see, dad's a director here in L.A. and mom owns a business in the fashion industry.

Dad doesn't go to work in the morning often. Sometimes he's stuck here when he doesn't have any projects to work on but that seldom happens. While mom stays here too and does her work in her own office in the house. She checks on the company sometimes but I do all the supervising. What can I say, I'm 17 and working.

I handle all the branches when it comes to representing mom. She doesn't want to go out much so she sends me. So, with that, I became responsible, even more than mom and dad.

I stretched and got up to fix my bed. I looked out the window and I saw the breaking dawn. It is magnificent! I love it and that's another reason I get up early. I truly appreciate nature's beauty and I'm an environmentalist myself. Unlike mom and dad who both think it stinks. I even wonder sometimes if I'm truly their daughter with all the differences we have.

I stepped in the shower and took a short bath to awaken myself. I had my day off today so I can go wherever I want. Dad and mom seldom hovers. They know me quite enough to go lingering. They know I come straight home after I had my time in my usual spots like the mall, library, coffee shops and such. Those two? They stay home and don't come out. They're like vampires that the sunlight will hurt their skin if they got exposed.

Weird, I know. We have so much differences but we still love each other very much. I stepped out my own bathroom which consist mostly of glass. Dad got a LOT of money from directing and we are kinda rich. Kinda. Fine, very rich. That's how mom got started in her business.

The house is mostly made up of glass inside and the ceiling is pretty high. My room has an interior color of baby blue which I totally love and has the star map by my bedside. I also stuck glow in the dark stickers just to stare at. I love them.

I dried myself and put on some jeans, t-shirt and rubber shoes. I stuck my ipod into my pocket and headed out. This is like my morning ritual. My parents already know where I'm heading so it's OK. I closed my room gently and started going for the stairs, which is made of glass again. I'm even lucky to have my door as wood and not transparent!

I looked up and saw the chandelier hanging from the roof. They reflected the door to my parent's room next door and I saw they're asleep. Even if the earthquake shook the life out of this house they'll still be sleeping soundly. I tiptoed my way and when I got in front of their room, I heard mom groan and push dad off the bed. Dad fell with a loud thud but snored even louder.

How could he possibly sleep through that? Even the slightest movement in the house and I wake up. Am I really their daughter? I wrapped up my thoughts because I really want to enjoy the morning air while the sun is still low. I headed onto the ground floor carefully because our rooms are on the 5th.

I know, COLOSSAL house. We were the only ones living in there but they wanted to live big. As I reached the bottom step, I saw Max walking towards me and blocking the exit. Oh, don't get me wrong. Max isn't my brother. He's our family dog. He's a golden retriever with shiny fur and is my only best friend. He wagged his tail at me, begging to let him come along.

"No, Max. Maybe some other time." I whispered and pat his head. He sat down and watched me go through the front door and gone. I can smell the morning air and breathed in. It's so good. I didn't want to use my car so early in the morning. And besides, it POLLUTES. I avoid using it at all times, but I have to if mom sends me off to far away meeting places.

It's a simple silver BMW. I didn't want a cherry red Ferrari because I know it's too much. Heck, I didn't even want a car. But dad nearly shoved the keys down my throat so I have to accept it. I walked down our neighborhood which consist of ginormous houses like ours. Hey, we live in the director's lane. We even have Christopher Columbus beside us!

I kept on going until I reached the park. I switched on my ipod and the song ran through my ears. I sat by the bench until the sun shone brightly, indicating it's 8 o'clock. I saw a jogger passed by me and the place is starting to crowd. I hate crowds. So I got up and walked again until I reached the mall. It's finally open! I went to my favorite shop and they are now serving.

I opened the door and went in as the bell above me rang. Looks like I'm the first customer in because the place is deserted.

"Welcome to The Coffee Club. You're right on time, Max. What will you have today?" Reggie asked as he prepared the ingredients of my usual order. He's a lean guy with dark blonde hair. He's my best friend, next to Max, that is. I sat down beside the big window so I can see what's happening outside.

"The usual." I answered. I sat there the whole morning until he gave me my order which is a brownie and a nice steaming cup of coffee. I smiled in delight. I always wanted my life to be this peaceful and quiet. Not like when mom buys me a dress and dad asks me to become an artist. Now that's headache.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a girl. My name is Maxine Wellbourne. My nickname is Max, I know, same as my dog.

I sipped my coffee and continued to relax for another hour until I saw a commotion right outside the shop. Girls were screaming and running towards the main mall. Wonder who they're chasing. Maybe another star perhaps who thought he could outsmart the girl population in this town. He has definitely got the wrong idea.

"Luke Frances is in the house." Reggie answered my thought. The shop is still empty so he sat opposite my chair and stared out the window too.

"Looks like he lost them." I said because the screaming group of teens stopped and looked around. Talk about pulling the crowd in. He really has some seducing powers with all these screaming fans out of bed so early in the morning.

I'm not really a fan of Luke because of certain reasons:

1) I know him since birth, probably, and we were playmates. What's wrong with that? Here's what :

His family left us because they moved closer to Hollywood so he can actually be a star ( that's what we think because they never really left any explanation as to their sudden moving). Dad even directed one of his movies with grudge. He still hasn't gotten over it because they are really close friends, dad and Luke's dad.

2) He became my family's enemy (with the exception of my grandfather who also lives with us). Grandpa forgave them easily because Luke's deceased grandfather was his military friend and they had a truce or something. I don't know exactly what it is.

3) He became a famous star who ignores his very first best friend. How cold is that? Is it because he's a big star now?

Whatever.

A hooded figure went inside and walked by us. He accidentally hit my elbow, causing the cup in my hands to spill all over me. He didn't even bother to say sorry and continued at the back. Reggie had his mouth hanging open and it probably reached the floor. He quickly got a napkin and handed it to me. My temper started rising. Reggie was about to stand and approach him but I stopped him.

What a jerk! After I cleaned my clothes, I walked up to him and said, "Who do you think you are!?"

He didn't look up.

"I'm talking to you! You spilled my coffee and you don't apologize?" I continued, my voice starting to rise.

"I'm sorry! Happy?!" He shouted at my face and he looked up. When he did, I finally saw who it was.

And I wasn't happy with it at all.
