I am awakened by freezing cold water on my head. I gasp in surprise but instantly choke on water. I attempt to get up, but the rest of my body is thrown into the water, except for my toes on my left foot, which I find a little odd. Before I choke on more water, I am pulled up and placed on what feels like a shore. Gasping for air, I open my eyes, to see Jae kneeling ear me, dripping wet. He looks at me and smiles.
"Gods, Zo. I thought I'd lost you!" He exclaims, rushing to hug me. That's when it all comes back to me. The battle, the pain, my mom dying. Remembering all of this, I did the only logical thing. I cry. Jae started rubbing comforting circles on my back.
"It's okay, Zo. You're safe now," He soothes. When the tears finally subside, I look at him.
"Was that water then-" I began, but he cut me off, nodding.
"Yes, the river Styx. You were on the brink of death, Zo. It's the only thing I could think of doing," He explains. Hearing that word, death, sent me into another spiral of tears.
"Mom, she, she was on the ground, fighting, and-" I hiccup. "She- she's- Jae, mother died," I say and I erupt into tears again. He pulls me closer, whispering,
"I know. She died a warrior, protecting her daughter. She made it to Elysium, Zo," he says, and I nod, sitting up again.
A few seconds after I calm down, a flash catches my attention. Turning around, I recognize two gods, Thanatos, and Hera. I scramble to my feet and bow, Jae following suit. Thanatos surprisingly is the first to speak,
"Brother, we meet again," At this, Jae nods respectfully. Thanatos continues, "Zoe, you have proven yourself worthy of the gods. You were honorary in battle and defeated a monster only one before you have managed, and he had help from the gods, whereas you did not. I accept you as my daughter, and I come bearing a gift," He said motioning to Hera. I am completley shocked. My father? Accepting me?
Hera turned to me and closes her eyes. Another bright flash, and I felt an excruciating pain in my back. Gasping, I stumble, and Jae catches me. I look back and see something I never thought I would see again. My spirit wings.
"Thank you, Hera, Father," I say bowing. Thanatos chuckles.
"Anything, my child. You are now immortal anyways, so feel free to join Olympus. I must go, I have many deaths to take care of," And with a blinding light, he was gone.
Shakily, I stand up. Testing my wings, I turn back to Jae, whose eyes were wide.
"Zo, your wings, they're beautiful," He said, going to touch them. I let him, and he shivered as death passed through his system. They would have killed any mortal, but those who have endured the Styx are not affected by them.
"I've missed them, " I sigh, closing them again.
After a couple minutes of my bliss, I decide to speak up,
"So, Jae, race ya to Olympus?" I ask, opening my wings again.
"You're on!" He exclaims, unfurling his.
"Eat my dust Son of Night!" I exclaim, shooting into the air.
