Chapter 1
I wake to the sound of people racing through the Pit. I wipe my crusted mouth and jump into the steam of the shower. Today was the big day for every 16 year old in the city. The day to decide their future. They would have to chose one of five groups, factions, to spend the rest of their life in. Amity, the faction of kindness, blame cruelty for disturbing the function of the city before they used this system. The Amity are in charge of running the city's farms and are always happy. The second faction, Candor, blame dishonesty, therefore never tell lies. I try to avoid them as much as possible as they are very loud and opinionated. The Erudite, the faction of intelligence, blame stupidity. They all wear the colour blue and glasses, even though I don't think half of them are blind. I'm in the faction of Dauntless. We blame cowardice and are adventure seekers. Everyone thinks we are the 'dangerous' and 'stupid' faction, which we are, but in my opinion, there is a certain beauty to our recklessness. And finally, the governing faction, Abnegation. They blame selfishness and only wear grey, somber clothes to draw attention away from them. The thought of the Abnegation brings a nauseous feeling into my stomach and I let the hot water of the shower cover me. My mind races back to two years ago exactly, the day I left...
I chose Dauntless, to escape the horror of the life I lived. Ever since Mum died, my days were filled with anxiety, pain, and Him. I never ever wanted to see Him again.
My mind replayed the hours of the Choosing Ceremony...
The 5 bowls of items tormented me. I stared at the glimmering water of the Erudite, the glass of the Candor, the earth of the Amity, the grey stones of the Abnegation and the steaming coals of the Dauntless. I held out my hand and cut open my palm with the knife. I found my hand leaning over the boiling Dauntless coals and a drop of my red blood sizzled over them. "Dauntless" Jeanine Matthews, the leader of Erudite, said as the crowd roared with excitement, well, only the Dauntless in the crowd. I looked over at the Abnegation. Mouths held open, women with hands tightly over their mouths. I was not one of them anymore...
I step out of the shower and wrap the fuzzy, black towel around me, keeping the warmth in. I grab my black t-shirt and put on my black pants. In Dauntless, we are only permitted to wear black. Zeke barges into the room. "Four! Come on the new Initiates are about to jump!" Zeke was my best friend here in Dauntless. We went through training together and have always stayed by each other's side. Zeke was the highest ranked in the Dauntless Born Initiate group, and I was the highest in the Transfer group. I had only four fears, the lowest amount of fears anyone had ever achieved in Dauntless, thus my nickname Four came about. "Ok Zeke. Coming"
"So, are you really going to be training the Transfers again?" Zeke laughs as we walk through the business of The Pit. "Yeah, I enjoy it" I say. I liked being their trainer, it was much more peaceful than training the Dauntless Borns. "Well, you know Uriah is at the Choosing Ceremony at the moment, he promised me he would chose Dauntless, because, you know" Zeke grins at the thought of his younger brother. "Wouldn't you want to train him, instead of all those Pansycakes?" He laughs. "Four?" I glare at Zeke and ignore his question. I never liked the word 'Pansycake' which is what we called anyone who wasn't Dauntless. We meet Shauna, Zeke's Girlfriend, at the bottom of the Net. She runs into Zeke's arms and passionately kisses him. I look away as Max, one of the Dauntless leaders yells from the top of the cliff "OK THEY'RE COMING" The Dauntless at the bottom cheer as we wait for the 'First Jumper'. The First Jumper was always a big deal here. It normally automatically ranked you first. I see a body stumble from the edge of the cliff
and fall. Her body flings into the net and all I see is a grey blur. She gives a laugh and stares into my eyes. Her blonde locks were tied into a bun and her grey dress flowed. She was beautiful. She was an Abnegation Transfer. Not just an Abnegation, but an Abnegation Girl. The First Jumper? I grab her hand and drag her out of the net. She stood small and and thin in front of me. I hear a scream pierce the air as a Candor Transfer falls into the net next. "Thank you" She smiles at me. "I can't believe it! A Stiff? To jump first? Miraculous." I say to Shauna and Lauren standing behind me. "Well, I guess that's why she left" I smile faintly. "What's your name?" Her mesmerising stern eyes demand attention, even in those plain, Abnegation drapes. "Think carefully, you don't get to pick again" I grin at her. "Tris, my name is Tris" She says, her voice, soft but firm. "First Jumper- Tris!" I roar with the response of the Dauntless emerging from the darkness. "Welcome to Dauntless" I say with a rush of energy throughout my body.
