"Class, settle down." Miss Camber said. Some of the more responsible students sat down, including me. To be honest, I was just tired of helping Xander glue puff-balls to his face.

"Xander! Put the glue down!" Miss Camber yelled, something she had to do often. Xander reluctantly put the glue back and came to sit. The rest of the first-grade class followed his lead, dropping their art supplies, blocks, or "house" items.

Rubbing her temples, Miss Camber sighed. "There's going to be a new student joining us in a couple of minutes. Please... make yourselves presentable at least." Murmurs rippled through the crowd excitedly. No one actually fixed their hair or smoothed their shirt down, but Miss Camber didn't even care anymore, calling the office to say the new kid could come down.

A few minutes later, the door opened and a small blonde girl shuffled in along with the principal. He gave the 'good luck' sort-or-look to Miss Camber, then disappeared down the hallway. The blonde girl surveyed the classroom, face blank. My mom called that a 'poker face.' I forgot what poker was. Is it a game... or...

My thoughts about poker were interrupted by Miss Camber clearing her throat. "Anything you want to say, dear?" 

The blonde nodded, brushing her bangs back from her eyes.
