          Dear Dad,

It's been a while since we've spoken, let alone seen each other. Not a day goes by where I don't think about what you're doing, who you're with, and if you're happy. Are you happy? Mom is still sad, but she's getting better, slowly but surely.

She met someone a while ago. A man named Max, and they've become good friends. He makes her smile when she's sad over you. He makes her feel better when she thinks she's not good enough and that's why you left. Max asked her on a date last week, and she said yes but she wanted to take it slow. Max kissed Mom yesterday evening, under the stars, on the roof of our apartment. Max told me that he loves her.

Max loves me, too. He cares for me and makes me smile when I'm sad. He's like the dad I've been missing since I was eight.

Why did you leave? Mom and I thought everything was fine. Until that night when you left for groceries and never came back. Why didn't you come back? You left Mom and me on our own, in broken pieces.

But then Max came and picked up those pieces. Some pieces have been lost, but most of them have been restored. I think of you every day, wondering what you're up to. I think of Max every day, thanking God that he came.

That is what's been happening if you were wondering. I still love you if you were wondering. Mom still loves you if you were wondering.
