Chapter 1
I sigh. The bruise still showed through the coverup I had put on it. Dammit. Why now? What had I even done to deserve it? Suddenly I had an idea. I slipped on the hair extensions Charlie had given me for my birthday. Now my hair was long enough to cover it. The dress was one of the only pieces of clothing I owned that I actually felt pretty in. Too bad the bruise showed when I wore it. Hearing footsteps coming up the stairs, I grab my purse and open the window. I had become an expert at jumping out of it and landing on my feet, soundlessly, like a cat. But this time it was different, I banged my shoulder on the handle as I jumped out and winced in pain, as an effect of this, I landed on the edge of my foot, rolling my ankle. I've dealt with much worse, so I jump back on my feet, take off my shoes, and run down the sidewalk to the street behind mine where Charlie would pick me up. This had become routine in my High School career. He'd never know I left. Even if he did, it's not like he would care. The only thing that sets him off is if I miss curfew. I met Charlie on Lawrence Way and jumped in his old beat up Mustang that smelled like his older brothers tobacco.
"You look great," he said, smiling at me.
I just sighed and looked out the window.
"You know, you should be nicer to me, after all, I didn't have to help you."
"Yes. Yes you did. I didn't let you cheat off of my History finals for nothing."
"Point taken."
