The Truth

I've got to warn you before I begin

This isn't a family-friendly kind of thing

No this isn't sugar coated or sweetened

This is real, they'll be no lies creeping

You see the world isn't family friendly no more

The world is real and I'm at your door

And I'm asking who are you?

Where do you stand?

And why are you sticking your head in the sand?

Trying to hide your face and not see what's around

You know what's happening but you don't hear a sound

See you're too scared to tell your truth

Too afraid of the light in the photo booth

You have a story to tell but you can't find the words

Well so do the bees and the bugs and the birds

But you don't hear them complaining, just singing

Seriously man, you need to get with it

See this world is full of terror and horror and crime

And for all of the kids it's a terrible time

Trying to stay innocent in a world that is anything but

Walking on knives trying not to get cut

Then you become a teenager and it's the opposite

See a knife and a wrist that is soon to be slit

Fighting the darkness and depression every damn day

Or the anxiety that hits you in every damn way

Fighting the issue of identity, of what's really you

Trying to find a path that fits, what do we do?

Then it's on to adulthood, and the problems are meant to be over

But really they're just starting, we know there's no four leaf clover

We push on through life trying not to feel the pain

We hear the cries and the tears but we just get on the train

Put in the headphones switch the music on loud

Close our eyes and try to lose ourselves in the crowd

We don't watch the news and see what's in the east

So we don't see that mother given her son as a feast

We don't want to know where the latest bomb went off

Because bombs, like phones, are apparently in every shop

We have racism, sexism, homophobia and cruelty

And all the while we are doubting our royalty

"What do they really do?" we ask

And most of us look at the next man and say "pass"

But now is not the time to doubt our leaders

It doesn't matter if they're weak because they still have to lead us

So instead of spending time hosting protests

How about spending time trying to protect

All the people that need it, the people on the street
