"No... swipe left... well....no! Nope...nada....definite no. Ugh, nobody on this stupid app is right for me!" I complain as I swipe through Matchmaker, a popular dating app. I've been on it for the past hour, and nobody has caught my eye yet. I'm 27 and I still haven't met anyone that I'm interested in. I really want to find someone and get my life together. Having a family is most important to me.

After a few more swipe lefts, I go to my dining room and grab a snack. I take out my laptop and Google "how to meet new people". Results show up for joining group activities around town, but I already know everyone in my little town. Reaching out through social media also came up, but that is what I'm trying to do. Everything else, like travel to new places, is way out of budget for me to do.

I close my laptop and get back to Matchmaker. After a few more swipes, I stop. My phone almost falls from my hand. I had stumbled upon the profile of Gina Brown, my favorite celebrity. I knew she had the app, but I never thought I would ever see her on it.

I swipe right immediately; anyone would agree that Gina was gorgeous. She had long brown hair and bright green eyes. Gina Brown was in several huge movies that I love. She was also a model and had her own talk show. I set my phone down and leave it alone for a while.

Later that day, I hear a notification bell on my phone. I pause Gina's talk show on my TV and check what it says. My phone almost drops from my hand again. I re-read the little message over to make sure I see it correctly.

"You have matched with Gina Brown"

I rubbed my eyes and read it again.

"You have matched with Gina Brown"

I immediately open the app. There it is, my profile picture and hers together in a heart. After a few minutes of staring at my phone, still not believing it's true, a message pops up from Gina. I excitedly reply.

Gina: Hey, I see we matched ;)

Jordan: Yup, I never expected to match with you

Gina: Why? ugh, if you are you going to be another guy who just wants me for fame, I'm leaving

Jordan: What? No way! I would love to get to know the real you, not the famous you.

Gina: That would be great! How about we meet at that cafe downtown?

Jordan: It's a date. See you there!!!

I log off my phone and put it away. Nerves swirl in my stomach as I prep for the date. I shower and brush my teeth; then, I put on a crisp, clean shirt and pants. I quickly smooth my hair, grab my wallet, and head out the door.

After about five minutes, I arrive at the cafe. Pulling up, I see a black limo parked along the side of the street. It must be Gina. I scurry inside.

"Hello, Gina," I say, sitting down at a small table with Gina. She wore a simple dress: white with black stripes. Her hair is pulled into a ponytail, and she has bright, red lipstick on. She is staring at her phone.

"Hey," she responds, unenthusiastically. Another woman next to her looks up.

"Who's this?" I ask.

"I-I'm Miss Brown's assistant, Carla," she squeaks, her short, black hair bounces as she stands up to shake my hand. She was kind of pretty.

After we sit in silence for a few minutes, a waiter asks us for our orders.

"I'll have a burger and fries please," I say.

"And for you?" he asks, Gina, who is still on her phone. Gina snaps her fingers.

"One small caesar salad, no garlic, extra oil," Carla says on command as if she's memorized the order. The waiter nods and leaves.

We soon get our food. I try to make conversation with Gina, but she acts as if she's bored, giving no emotion to her responses. After a while, Carla and I begin talking.

"I never really knew how, well, boring Gina was," I whisper. Carla nodded and giggled. We both laugh while Gina stares at her phone.

Eventually, I realize the time and excuse myself. Before I leave, however, I slip a note into Carla's hand, with my number written on it.

Two Years Later

"And so, Carla Denon, will you marry me?" I am down on one knee, a ring in my hand. Carla squeals and nods, tearing up, then embraces me tightly. I think about the past two years. If it weren't for that date with Gina, I never would've been at this point.

I'm glad I swiped right.
