CHAPTER ONE:
I sit across from my best friend Amelia. It's lunch and we just finished our Aptitude Tests. In front of me, I have a tray with one apple and a sandwich. Around me, there are other tables of factions eating, waiting for their turn for the Aptitude Test. All of the students look nervous, except for the Dauntless, who look confident.
Amelia is nibbling like a rat on her salad sandwich. She looks like she just saw a ghost, and I feel a bit like that.
Usually we'd be talking about the hot guys from other factions, but today we're sitting in absolute silence.
'So how was your aptitude test?' I ask. I know we're not allowed to talk about our results, but at least her saying that would break the silence.
'You know we can't talk about our test, Penny.' She seems to have woken up from a trance.
'Amelia, you know I don't like nicknames, call me Penelope.'
'Oh, I know you don't, you're the only one who doesn't call me Amy!' We laugh, but only because it's true.
'Yay, we've got Faction History next.' I say, grinning. Only a Erudite would enjoy a subject like Faction History.
'Yay! I forgot for a second.' Amelia says, just as pleased as I am. I'm glad to see her less shaken.

After school, I get home to my house. The walls are painted a brilliant blue and the floors are timber.
'Hi Mum, Dad'
'Hello, Darling. Was the Aptitude Test fun?' My mother asks me.
'Um, yeh. It was great.' I say, with all sarcasm.
'Great dear, great. Do you want some cookies, your father made them and they are quite delicious for 'Dad' standards.' I giggle, and so does Dad.
'Just one, I have to go study and think about the Choosing Ceremony tomorrow.'
'Oh yes, although the choice is pretty obvious.' Dad says while wining. I nod as I take a cookie and slide some folders out of my bag and walk up the staircase to my room.
I sat at my desk surrounded by stationery. I opened up my Faction History book take out a bit of paper to take notes. As I do this, I begin to think.
I hadn't really thought about it before, but I just started thinking about the Choosing Ceremony. I imagined myself cutting my hand and the blood dripping into the Erudite bowl, making the water go red. I picture my parents in the crowd clapping proudly, as well as my faction that I will remain in my whole life.
My Aptitude Tests say that I'm destined for Erudite. I'm happy about that, and therefore there's no need to worry.
I open my book about Faction History, and read every page. Although my mind is still picturing the future of my faction. I think about other options in other Factions. I have never really questioned my faction and if that's where I belong.
'Stop thinking about other factions and think about studying!' I tell myself.
'You're not selfless, you're not brave, you're not peaceful, you're not honest. You are Intelligent.
I thought about the words from the Erudite Manifesto.
"Knowledge is the only logical solution to the problem of conflict."
I pondered the wars that I've read about in Faction History and remembered that I always believed in what my faction said.
Then I realised that what I was doing was not Candor, Dauntless, Amity or Abnegation.
It was only Erudite.
I was thinking and figuring out a logical answer.
I was understanding each faction and that I only belonged in Erudite.
No other Factions would even think about this topic so thoroughly.
I tried to study again, and it was easy because my mind was more focused on the task at hand.
Tomorrow was the Choosing Ceremony.
And I couldn't be more ready.
