Chapter 1I stared at the sunset. Wind blowing, leaves rustling in the long field. Tall long weeds swaying to the wind. I came here everyday. Pa would bring me here when I was a child. We always leave home before the sunset.
After he passed, I would come here to think of him. Many people try to forget the things that remind them of their loved ones. Grandma says, ¨If you try to forget everything about that person, you may forget them. Just because a person doesn't do something great, doesn't mean we should forget them. If all we did was forget the ones that are dead, we wouldn't know history.¨
I stood up and started walking toward my horse. I placed my hands on the saddle and pulled myself onto the saddle.
¨Yip. Click click." we strolled off to home.
(At Home)
"Anna?"
I jumped to the sound of my friends voice. I turned to the corner to see him standing in the barn doorway. He was chewing on a straw stick.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"Taking care of Jackson."
"Why? Went on a midnight stroll?"
I walked to the house ignoring what he just said.
"Anna! Wait!"
I kept on going to the backdoor.
Jack ran to catch up to me.
I stormed through the kitchen and to my bedroom. As I saw Jack approach me I closed and locked my bedroom door.
"Anna." Jack said. He was stood up against my door.
I slid down, back facing my door.
"I didn't mean for it to sound like that."
I sighed.
"Goodnight Jack."
I heard him slowly walk away from my bedroom door. I got up and walked to my bed. I snuggled under the covers. I started at the ceiling.
Why did Jack say that? He knew how much it meant to me to watch the sunset.
(Morning)
The sun peaked through my lace curtains shining directly on my face. I got out of bed and changed into my clothes Grandma had washed the night before. I slid my long brown boots on with my cowgirl hat.
I walked to the kitchen and saw Sarah, Charlotte, and Jack already seated at the table. Jack eyes landed on mine and started at them. I looked away and grabbed my eggs and bread. I headed to the table.
"Morning Anna." my mom kissed my forehead and gave me a hug from behind.
"Morning." I sat down at the table. I glanced at Jack. He was staring at me. I quickly glanced away.
I dug my fork into the two eggs I had on my plate. After I was finished, I stood up and walked to the sink and placed my dish in the soapy water.
"Hurry Sarah, the school bus is going to be here any minute." Mom said.
Sarah started gobbling her eggs down.
I grabbed my backpack and slung it over one shoulder and took one glance at the kids eating at the table before I went out the front door. I walked to the curb and waited for the bus. Just as it came down the street, Sarah, Charlotte, and Jack made their way to where I was standing.
Scheech!!
The bus halted to a stop. I climbed aboard. I settled on an empty seat and slid to the window. I watched as Sarah, Charlotte, and Jack climbed in with a few of my neighbors. I sat there as i felt my seat go down. I knew it was Jack.
