"Hazel, is that you?" My mother called from the kitchen.
"Yeah, it's me who else would it be," I said sarcastically.
"Come here I have something to tell you," she said ignoring my sarcasm.
I walked in, she was sitting down in a barstool looking all business like.
"Sit, I need to tell you something."
I sat, "what?"
"You might be unhappy but, dad is coming here to visit. We agreed that I can't just keep you from seeing him, and it's time you forgave him."
I rolled my eyes at her, "mom, really? After everything you want him back here?"
"Yes, honey, it was a mistake that he made. But there's still a bit of tension that we haven't excused yet, and you need to see your own father. He's a good dad, Hazel. Just maybe not a good husband."
I stood up and shoved the chair in, walking back upstairs.
"Hazel!" My mother called.
I ignored her and slammed my door as I went into my room. How could she just invite him over like some dinner guest! He hurt her, and she's just going to ignore that too?! That's all she seems to do, ignore stuff and act like everything is ok, when it's clearly not.
"Forget him," I said to myself.
Then I rolled over and closed my eyes.
I dreamed about Everett, the way he smirked at me and consoled me when I told him about my problems. The comforting feeling he gives off whenever I'm around him. He's the only one I want to talk to, the only one who understands. Then I heard a distant ringing, so loud in my ears as it seemed to get closer. I woke up suddenly to notice the time, 6:30 am, my first day of school is today. Screw this. I got up anyways and threw on a beige undershirt with black tights and a lacy orange dress. I saw my backpack I had purchased before the move, a forest green chunky crossbody backpack. I picked it up and drug myself downstairs into the kitchen. Then I heaved it onto the counter and grabbed a yogurt for breakfast. I gulped it down fast, then proceeded to take my brown pork pie hat, throw it on my head and put on some combat boots. I laced the laces carefully and adjusted my hat. By the time I had done this it was already 7:50, crap. I grabbed the bag and flung it across my body, then ran outside to grab my bike.I had arrived at school, the time was 8:03 am. I pulled out a cigarette from inside my bag, everyone was in their little cliques and I stood alone. The courtyard was huge, but the school was massive. I breathed in the smoke and let it swirl around in my lungs.
"Hey!" A girls voice yelled.
I turned around to see a girl who looked to be older then me, she has long brown hair, piercing blue eyes, and furious eyebrows crinkled from her anger.
"Excuse me! I'm talking you little brat!" She yelled in my face.
"What?" I mumbled.
"Student council passed a rule against smoking, it's forbidden!" She hissed.
"Sorry, I'm new, I didn't know," I said while dropping my cigarette onto the ground and extinguishing the flame.
"What is wrong with you! People sit here, they eat here!" She yelled.
"Why are you doing this, you don't know me," I replied.
"Leah's grandmother died from lung cancer, she takes this stuff pretty seriously," one of her clique members said.
"Eat it," Leah interrupted, "I want to see you eat it."
"No!" I yelled in disgust.
"Eat it or I'll kick the shit out of you!" She yelled back.
"Come on Leah that's enough," one of the girls said.
"No, no I want to see her eat it!" She said taking the cigarette and grabbing me.
I screamed at her and tried to wriggle away from her grasp.
"Come on Leah, she's like twelve!" One of the girls said.
I couldn't just stand here and let her get her way, I spat at her face and she screamed at me while letting me free.
"YOU ARE DEAD! DEAD!" She screamed as I ran away smiling.
After the day was over I rode back home on my bike. It was my first day and I had already made an enemy, great. My mom greeted me at the door, smiling, fakely.
"How was school," she asked, hoping I'd say that I had fun.
"Fine," I said plainly.
"That's all? Just fine?" She said disappointed.
"What am I supposed to say," I said.
"Well, I just thought you'd have more to say."
"Nope, just fine."
"Hazel, wait," she said as I had begun to walk away, "your dad is coming around 5 today, act welcoming he'll be happy to see you."
"Okay, whatever," I said annoyed.
She sighed loudly, "please Hazel."
But I was already running up the stairs. I sat on my bed and pulled out my homework for the day. I had a lot and it looked tiring, but I might as well do it. I turned on my iPod and hit play, then I grabbed a pencil and got working. The time had flew by and when I was done it was already 5'o clock. Great, my dad would be here any moment.
*ding dong*
Speak of the devil. Time to plaster on a fake smile.
"Hazel!" I heard my mother call.
I ran downstairs and greeted my dad. He looked tired, with bags under his eyes and his beard unshaven.
"Hi Hazel," he said while trying to smile.
He stepped toward me and kissed my forehead.
"Hi, dad," I said while stepping backward.
"I missed you so much, Sunshine."
The first name my parents had chosen was Sunshine. But they decided to go with Hazel, which I preferred. I didn't laugh, I couldn't make myself laugh after seeing him like this. He looked broken. Then he went over to my mom and held her, I went back upstairs to let them have their time. I heard them talking, it wasn't arguing luckily.
I walked into the bathroom and pulled a razor blade out of the cabinet. I held it in my wobbling hand, staring at myself in the mirror. After a while I pulled my head away from the mirror and rolled my sleeve up, revealing my scar ridden pale arms. Pressing the blade to my delicate skin, I exhaled. Half with pain and half with relief. I watched the thick red liquid dribble out of the fresh wounds. Two cuts, one for my day at school and another for seeing my empty shell of a dad, again. I exhaled and stared into the mirror. I saw a pale, tired, sad girl. More then sad, empty.
