The next day sucked. I spent the whole day hooked up to the stimulation but it yielded no results.

“I don’t understand, yesterday it went so well,” I unhooked myself from the machine “What went wrong?”

“I think you are too preoccupied with the idea of using your mind to manipulate it, you need to also use your soul to harness the power.”

I raised an eyebrow at Elnora.

“Why don’t you go ask Seth, he’s the best manipulator we’ve got here,” she suggested, shutting down her tablet.

I cringed, “He’s spooky,”

She rolled her eyes “You’re spooky, you wear a mask like a villain from a comic book.”

I mockingly gasped, “But I’m Batman’s daughter, that makes me a hero!”

Elnora just shook her head in response and grabbed her cane as well as my wrist. “Come along,”

“Where are we going?” I asked as she led me down the white corridor.

“Library,”

I relaxed. As long as it wasn’t near Mr. Dark and brooding, I was good. She pushed me into the library and the doors slid shut.

I walked into the large dark room aimlessly drifting among the bookshelves. “Is this even legal?” I wondered out loud, I’d never seen so many books in one place.

“Yes actually, the spaceship is government property so books are legal on board.”

I jumped, turning towards the voice’s source. “Oh, hi there,” I gave an awkward little wave, backing away from the shelves. “I was just er, leaving,”

Seth stepped into the path between the bookshelves with a stack of books under one arm. His mismatched eyes burned a hole through me, “Elnora messaged me,”

“Did she?” I nervously laughed, what was it with this guy that made me so uneasy around him?

“Yeah,” his response was brisk and cold. In fact, it felt like the temperature had dropped a few degrees in the library. “Here, take this,” he handed me the stack of books.

“What do I-”

He answered before I could finish my question “Read them and come back tomorrow.”

“Okay…” I hefted the stack and started towards the door.

“Just remember-” he hesitated, a conflicted emotion darted across his face, he then added as if changing his mind “to close the door.”

“Okay,” I repeated, giving him a queer glance “Bye.”

“Yo,” Rain jostled my shoulder as I closed the door to the library. “Sup,”

I stared at him for a second, “You probably think your attempts at being a gangster are endearing don’t you?”

He rolled his eyes “Yes, because saying ‘yo’ makes me a gangster wannabe,”

“Eh, you never know, remember that time when you pretended you were a mafia boss and got beat up by the real mafia boss ‘cause you hit his kid on the playground?”

“Shut up, you said you wouldn’t mention that again,”

“Ha! Fat chance of that happening.”

“What were you doing in there?” Rain nodded in the direction of the library.

“Getting homework,” I gestured towards my stack of books, but since my hands were full, the stack wobbled dangerously.
