Chapter 1 - Just Another Normal Day

Ugh, my hair is always so messy in the morning, I really wish I could have perfect straight hair. Instead I have this thick wavy hair that tangles too easily—sigh—oh well, at least when I fix it I get compliments, so I guess it isn't too bad. Even though I complain about my hair, I don't hate it, sure I would like it to be different, but I really don't mind it that much. In fact, I don't mind anything about me, I like myself the way I am; with turquoise eyes, butterscotch hair, slightly tanned skin, and my height of 5'5''. Yup, I like myself the way I am.

Today is just like any other normal day, for school that is: get up, take a shower, brush teeth, get dressed, fix hair, eat breakfast, and then go to school. So far all that is left is eat breakfast and go to school (once I am done with my hair). I decided to fix my hair into a waterfall braid, which looked really good with my waves, if I do say so myself. I double check in the mirror making sure everything looks good, then I head downstairs to the kitchen.

As I reach the bottom of the stairs I spot my older brother coming out from kitchen. “Hello, oniichan. Done with breakfast?” I ask and he just lets out a sigh.

“Gabby, do you really need to call me that? We aren't in Japan nor are we Japanese. Don't suck me up in your own little world.” he said.

“What's wrong with calling you oniichan? You are my oniichan, and I like saying it.” I pouted, “I know! How about when we are alone I’ll call you oniichan and when we are with friends I’ll call you Matt. Yes? Please...” I puppy dog eyed him.

I could see him clenching his jaw, then he looked to the floor. I kept looking at him until he looked back up. “Fine, you win. Call me however you want but not in front of others. Now go and eat breakfast so we can go to school, okay?” with that I went into the kitchen and he continued with his business.

“Okaasan, what's for breakfast?” I asked my mom when I got in.

“What ever it is you want.” she responds without turning away from the stove.

“Why do you call her that, Gabby?” my little brother asked. He was seated at the table waiting for his breakfast.

I smiled at him, “Because I like it. Just like I sometimes call you otouto. Do you hate it? Does it disturb you? Do you only want me to call you Chris?” I panicked. I didn't want my little brother to start thinking of me as eccentric. His opinion of me mattered big time.

“Calm down Gabby, I only asked you why. And I don't hate it, it's just...different. But not in a bad way!” I hugged him. He was just too cute. My little brother is a seven year old, chubby faced, fluffy hair, blue eyed bundle of adorableness. I love my little brother, also my big brother, but Chris is my favorite. I actually love all little kids, their so cute, it makes me want to play and care for them.

I finished my breakfast and went to get my brother so we could get going to school. My brother is two years older than me, I am sixteen and he is eighteen. We've always gone to school together, but once at school we don't really interact that much, but at least he isn't one of those brothers that completely ignore you because they think of you as an embarrassment or nuisance. My brother and I are pretty cool with each other, if he sees me he just nods his head in my direction and I nod back. Yup, we have an easygoing relationship with each other.

“Ready? Let's go then.” He appeared out of nowhere making me jump back to reality. “Hurry or I will leave you behind.” With that he went out the door and I hurried after him.

When we got to school, I went to my locker to put in textbooks and anything else I wouldn't need until later in the day. As I was closing my locker I thought I felt a presence behind me, but I just shrugged it off as nothing. When I turned around, I came face to face with none other than one of my childhood friend.
