When we entered the house, we were still laughing because of what happened back at the grocery store.
Mom called out from the kitchen accusingly, “What did you guys do?”
Stifling my laugh I answered, “Oh nothing mom, just the usual.”
And then as if on cue, Ryan burst out laughing so hard.
I smacked him on the arm also trying not to laugh, “Ry! Stop it! Stop laughing!”
But I couldn’t help it; I also started laughing accompanied by a loud unladylike snort that started another wave of laughter. Soon, the house was full of laughter, now I was worried that maybe the neighbours would call the cops to shut us up.
Our laughter died down eventually.
Mom placed her hands on her hips, “Are you both done laughing? ‘Cuz some of us need to eat and I’m starving! Cook now!” Mom went up the stairs while murmuring something that I guessed was: Kids nowadays, troublesome menaces.
I went to the internet and searched 10 minute recipes. I found two dishes that I love the most and started preparing the ingredients.
I chose the easy ones like: Pesto pasta with peas and Citrus sole. Besides, we are only four in the family. We don’t need much food.
Ryan and I started cooking with our game faces on. We were overconfident since the description said Very easy to do. The ten minutes turned out to be fifteen minutes, then the fifteen minutes turned out to be thirty minutes. But eventually, we did it!
We high-fived each other, then we just stared at our wonderful creations. Thank God for the internet and easy cooking!
We began setting our round table and cleaning the kitchen. I poured lemonade into each of our mugs then placed the food in the middle of the table. Voila! Done!
Whew I’m exhausted, now I know why sometimes mom is so grouchy after cooking.
Dinner can be lonely sometimes; we are not like those families who are all complete while eating dinner. Dad is a very busy man, he comes home at 9 or 10 in the evening. He calls and tells us to finish the food whenever he has already eaten, but when he doesn’t call it means we should save him some food. We got used to it by now, at the dinner table we are only 3.
Dad called to say he has already eaten. Oh well, more for us then.
Ryan called mom, “Mom! Dinner’s ready! We really worked hard on it!”
Mom came down immediately, excitement and anxiety on her face. “Are you both sure this is edible? The last time you made dinner it was burnt to the core.”
We chuckled.
“Of course it’s edible! I’ll have you know, I have been practicing my cooking skills lately.” I said with a hurt expression on my face.
Mom placed her hands up in mock surrender, “All right all right! Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s eat!”
I was kind of nervous because I really wanted mom to like our food.
