Track 30: Acteurs

Eavesdropping wasn't as satisfying as it looked on TV.

Mostly you just felt dumb.

Dumb for thinking that you actually wanted to know what people were saying behind your back.

After Rocco and I exchanged stiff goodbyes, I headed in the direction of the lobby to wait for my mom, who was still in her private meeting with Ackerman and Winona Springsteen. I was passing a door that was slightly open when I heard a voice say, "I know you like to piss people off, but why do you keep talking about hooking up with Misery?"

It was a very familiar voice. One that had done nothing but spew venom all day. It stopped me in my tracks, and I looked up and down the hallway to make sure no one was coming before peeking through the crack in the door.

Enid and Dom were the only people occupying the small conference room, and judging by their body language the meeting wasn't going well. They were facing each other, but her back was to me. I could see Dom's irritated expression clearly.

"Seriously, why're you acting like this?" Enid continued.

"Acting?" Dom was half-leaning, half-sitting on the conference table with his arms across his chest. "I tried that a while back. Mom made me audition for some stupid fruit snack commercial. Wanna know what we found out that day?"

Enid shifted, but didn't make any guesses.

"I suck at acting."

I recalled Dom's animated, cringe-worthy delivery of the cue cards during the first episode of Misery Loves Company, and silently agreed.

"So...if you're being genuine about wanting Miz, why'd you ask for my number when we first met?"

Shrugging, Dom carded a hand through his golden waves. "Because you were there." His tone grew mocking. "And I like making new friends. Plus Miz wasn't exactly feeling any of this, was she? Do you think I would've gotten her number if I'd asked? I doubt I'd get it now- even with my pretend boyfriend status."

"But why stay up night after night talking to me? I told you things I've never told anyone before, and you claimed to do the same!" Enid paused. "OK, you didn't tell me that the ex who broke your heart was Jae's sister, but I'm guessing it's because you didn't want me to judge her if I ever met her?"
