Sense of Normality

I was standing near the stairs eavesdropping on my mother and father's conversation. I couldn't hear much but I heard parts of it,

"How is Hazel?"

"I missed you."

And then a muffled,
"Moving home...staying..."

As I said, I couldn't hear too much of the conversation. I gave up after a prolonged silence and went to my bedroom. My iPod was whispering music into my ears, I was kind of bored. I haven't done much since we moved in, maybe I should change that. I don't know what to do though, I guess I could

*ping... ping*

What is that? I moved over to where the sound was coming from, my window. I looked down to the grass to see Everett standing with a fistful of pebbles. I've been waiting to see him since school ended. I descended downstairs and crept to the back door by the stairs. It opened slowly and Everett was standing there waiting,

"Hi, can I come in?"

"Sure," I replied, "but be quiet my parents are in the kitchen."

"Parents? Plural? I thought it was just you and your mom."

"I'll explain later, follow me."

I tiptoed upstairs with Everett behind me and we went in my room.

"Where were you today?" Everett asked.

"School, it was my first day today."

"Ohh, Westfield High right?"

"Yeah"

"Right, it sucks, I dropped out of there."

"I can see why, I hate it here. I hate everyone. All their bourgeois designer bullshit, the east coast was much cooler. At least we had weather"

"I bet, I love it when the leaves change."

"Me too."

Then we sat in silence, in the background my iPod was still whispering irate tunes. Everett and I's knees were touching but neither of us scooted away. It was peaceful, I felt like I could tell him anything and he'd listen. It was the most comfortable I've ever been around someone. Until my parents interrupted it. I heard someone climbing the stairs,

"Shit," I mumbled.

"What?"

"My parents, hurry hide!" I whispered

"Hazel?" My mom said.

"What?"

Everett ducked into the closet just in time as the doorknob twisted and the door opened.

"Your dad and I were talking, and we've decided to get back together." She took a deep breath, "this may be hard for you, but I've decided to give him a second chance."

"Fine."

"What?"

"I said fine, if that's what you want then fine."

"Really, are you okay honey?"

"Seriously mom, if you really want to let him back into our family then do it."

"Alright, if you're sure."

"I'm sure."

"Then I'll leave you alone, goodnight Hazel."

She closed the door and I could hear her footsteps patter all the way downstairs.

"Coast is clear, you can come out now."
