Eleanor wanted to cry, to let everything out in a wave of tears, but they would not succumb to her wishes. Regardless of how hard she tried. "Terminal leukemia, three months." These four words were enough to turn her life upside down. Her shoulders drooped along with her heavy heart, as a sigh escaped her lips. Making her way to Tiffany's ward, she took a deep breath and steeled herself for the wave of emotions that would hit her.
She stared at the sleeping figure of her best friend, looking yet not really seeing. Her heart ached, seeing the state Tiffany was in, oxygen tube draped under her nose and intravenous lines inserted into her arms. She longed to go back to her childhood days, when Tiffany was not deathly ill. Cursing the world for its cruelty and injustice, a tear rolled down her cheek. Above all, she was afraid. The fright of losing her best friend made her want to curl up in a corner and cry.
Instead, she forced herself to be strong because it was necessary, because Tiffany was not going to be around much longer, and while the girl was still breathing, she wanted to create as many happy memories as possible.
"Hey, you're here," the hoarse voice made her snap out of her trance.Yawning, Tiffany sat up to face her best friend. As soon as she opened her mouth to speak, Tiffany silenced her with a slight shake of her head, a small smile gracing her lips, before whispering a barely audible, "I know. The doctor told me," Eleanor returned the smile with one of her own, except that hers mirrored the immense sadness she was feeling inside.
"Come on, don't be sad. You know how much I dislike seeing you moody. Just take it as me moving to another country far away... but what if heaven doesn't have any Wi-Fi? How am I going yo update my Facebook and Twitter?" Eleanor chuckled at Tiffany's attempt to cheer her up. "If heaven doesn't have any internet connection, you had better update my Twitter." Tiffany said. Grabbing her arm, Eleanor shook it with all her might. "Seriously Tiff, I sometimes wonder if you understand the gravity of the situation," she managed with a small smile.
Recalling what she was thinking before Tiffany woke up, she asked the girl gently if there was anything she wanted to do. As soon as the words left her mouth, Tiffany's eyes lit up. "I want to ride a hot-air balloon, ride on a bicycle by the beach... and..."
The blithe laughter of the two girls could be heard echoing through the hallways of the hospital throughout the night.
