Chapter 4

Riley's POV

when Maya walked in the class with Uncle Eric I was worried one because she looked like she'd been crying even though she didn't look too upset

"Maya what happened are you OK?" I asked but before she could answer uncle Eric was in front of me

"Riley I need to talk to you in the hall" he said and I nodded and followed him really confused

"Mayas mom had to leave and she's going to be staying with Shaun for a while she will tell you what's going on when she's ready alright don't push her" he said and his words kind of scared me

"her mom isn't dead is she?" I ask horrified and he shakes his head

"no her mom is alive" he said and left me even more confused if her mom is leaving town why isn't Maya going with her and her mom has been sick for a while how is she well enough to travel and why is she staying with Shaun and not us I was just so confused and when I went back into the class Maya looked slightly worried

"we'll talk later" she whispered and class started and I was forced to actually pay attention to Uncle Eric as he was talking about grammar or something and then we had band which is like the only class where we don't sit near each other because we play different things before we knew it we had gym and Uncle Eric gave everyone free time which means Maya and I went to the top of the bleachers to talk

"OK so how was your detention with dad?" I asked and she sighed

"Ri I can't lie to you your my best friend it wasn't really a detention I met with both your parents Uncle Eric Uncle Shaun and Mr.Feney to figure out who I'm going to stay with" She said and I was shocked why would she lie to me and why would they need to desiderate

"Uncle Eric told me you were staying with Shaun because your mom had to leave town" I say and she nods

"why was she able to leave if she's been sick for so long and why didn't you go with her I mean why would she leave you here" I asked and she sighed

"you won't understand Riley you can't understand both your parents love you and would never ever consider going anywhere without you and your brothers so you can't even comprehend that some parents aren't like that my mom left me she isn't coming back Ri she abandoned me" she said and I sighed

"Maya calm down she didn't abandon you she will probably be back in a few days" I says and Maya looks upset

"Riley she isn't going to come back I love you your my best friend you know that but you don't understand and my mom left me 3 months ago she hasn't called she hasn't sent money I don't even know where she is she took off with her new boyfriend who is half her age Shaun saw her last week and she gave him guardian papers she doesn't want me Ri the only real family I have gave me away for 3 months I have been on my own and now Uncle Shaun has taken me in I don't know what's going to happen but I do know my mother is never going to come back" she said and I am in shock

"Maya what do you mean she left three months ago? Why would a mother just leave her kid it doesn't make since" I say and she laughs

"like I said I love you and I don't expect you to understand but Tony's mom did the same thing to him and Uncle Eric the difference is I don't have a dad either I don't want to talk about this I'll see you later Uncle Shaun'I picking us up after school" she said and then walked away leaving me shocked and in the back if my mind I know she has a point about Tony's mom even though we don't talk about her we all know she left them and apparently Maya's mom did as well and in a way I understand why she wouldn't tell me I mean like she said my parents wouldn't even think about leaving us

"Riley!" Uncle Eric called me over and I went over

"what happened?" he asked and I sighed

"She told me what happened I didn't - I don't understand how her mom can just leave I told her she'd come back that a mom won't just leave her kid and she got mad and said I can't understand because my parents would never leave me and then she said she didn't want to talk about it anymore and she left" I said and he nodded

"Alright I think the only two that may kind of understand her are Shaun and Tony he's in Math right now I had him transferred to your dad's class go grab him here's a note" he said and I took off to dad's class room

"Yes Riley?" Dad asks when I walked in

"Coach Mathews needs to see Tony" I say and hand him the note and he nods Tony grabs his stuff and follows me

"Ri what's wrong?" he asks when he we're alone and I sigh

"I messed up Tony Maya needed me and I couldn't help her because I don't really understand how somebody can do that and I know she understands why I have a hard time understanding it but still she's my best friend and I can't help her I think I may have made it worse I don't know if I should tell you but you may be the one who can help her" I say and he looks shocked

"did her mom left again?" he asks softly and it's my turn to look shocked

"what do you mean again?" I asked and his eyes went wide

"her mom has never been the most stable Ri she goes and comes like my mom did she leaves for a week or two and then comes back" he said and I wanted to cry for my best friend

"You need to talk to her Tony I love her but I don't really understand how a mom can leave their kid you know she doesn't like pity and I can't not pity her" I say and he nods understanding and follows me to the Gym and she is sitting on the bleachers where we were earlier and painting her nails like she always does when she's upset and I fell horrible that I can't help her but I also know that Tony can
