I walked home that day, I still felt the pain in my cheek and throughout my whole body it rumbled. I tried to sneak in, unfortunately my mother was waiting for me. I tried to cover the bloodied bruise on my cheek with my hair but it was too late,

"Hazel! What is that, what happened?!" She said trying to grab at my face, however I pried her away.

"It's nothing, I just tripped."

"That's definitely not nothing, and that's not the truth." She continued, "if you're having trouble at school there are plenty of other ones we can transfer you to."

"No, mom, everything is fine. I'm not going to run away from my problems, plus this school is the closest one near our house."

"You are so brave Hazel, it's like that one time in kindergarten, when you insisted that I bring you home from the slumber party 'cause all the other girls were sleeping with the nightlight on. I'm sorry that your father moved back in with us so fast, you've probably been feeling forgotten."

"No, mom, I'm glad dad is back, even if what he did before was a shithead move."

"Yeah, he was a shithead, but we love each other."

"Mom, what are you scared of?"

"Well, lately, everything. Life does that sometimes."

I closed my eyes and rested my head on my mom's shoulder for a minute and then I parted and went back upstairs.

I went in my room to see Everett sitting near the edge of my bed. I almost screamed but I didn't, I was mostly just shocked.

"Everett? What are you doing here?"

He looked up and then his eyes widened,
"Hazel, what happened to your cheek?"

"Oh, yeah, that."

"Come on, lets go clean that up."

He grabbed my hand and I blushed, then he walked me into my bathroom. He took a rag and ran it under cold water, placing it on my cheek. I winced.

"Sorry, are you going to tell me what happened now?"

"Right, well, there's this girl at school and we didn't bode well on the first day,"
I took a breath and continued, "she was pissed because I was smoking a cigarette, so she tried to make me eat it and I spat at her face. Then today she caught me again and beat me up, I burned her arm."

He removed the cloth from my face and grabbed ointment and a bandage,

"Look, you want her to leave you alone? Stop making your life a living hell? Short of killing her, there's only one solution. Scare her. Make her afraid of you. It's the only thing bullies react to. I can help you do it."

"How?"

"It's simple. You simply walk up to her and say, "Here's the deal. I need you to stop harassing me. I got what you want. Drugs. Come to my house tomorrow for your free sample. I'm a dealer, and a good one. I got the best shit in town." It'll be easy."

"But I don't have coke, she's a coke head."

"You don't need any, it's just an excuse to get her here. After that she will leave empty handed and terrified."

"Great, but how do I scare her."

"That's where I come in," he said smiling devilishly.

The next day after school I lured Leah to the basement, she was following behind me.

"If you're pulling my leg I swear to god," Leah whined.

"I keep my stash down here, no more questions."

She followed behind me silently until we reached a room downstairs,

"What the hell is this place?"

"As I said, my stash."

I flicked the light switch and Everett sat in the middle of the room, rocking back and forth.

"Who's this?" Leah asked.

"Hit the lights," Everett said with the same devilish grin pasted on as last night. I did as he said.

"What the hell?!" Leah said confused and frustrated.

The lights were flickering as Everett rocked back and forth, laughing maniacally.

"What is going on?! Someone explain, now!" Leah yelled over Everett's laughter.

I heard Leah scream in the dark, Everett was no longer rocking in his chair. I started to become a bit scared, then I saw it. I didn't know what it was, but it wasn't Everett. The thing looked like a baby, a wrinkly old baby. I was petrified, Leah was screaming, and the lights were still flickering. I heard a slash and scream followed by crying. Shit. I grabbed for the light switch and in the dark my fingers felt it. I looked around and Everett was the only one in the room, rocking back and forth in his chair.

"What the hell was that!" I yelled

"Woah, Hazel calm down, we did it! We scared that bitch!"

"No, I saw something."

"What are you talking about, celebrate!"

I started crying, I was scared.

"Get out! GET OUT!" I screamed.

"Hazel, wait!" Everett said as I stumbled out of the room. He tried to chase me but I shoved him and ran back upstairs.

"I thought you weren't afraid of anything!" He yelled.

I was lying on my bed, tears streaming down my face. What the hell was that! I know I saw something else in that room, we weren't alone. Why would he lie to me?! I wanted to trust him and I wanted to be near him but not now. I was terrified thinking about him. And Leah, what happened to her? She was gone the second I turned the lights on. Enough. I turned my lights off and rolled over. My eyes closed and I had nightmares, of terrible monsters chasing me into chasms of darkness. They wrapped their arms around my legs and tried to tie me down, I ran far from them but they seemed to be getting closer. I struggled against them but they got harder to fight off, soon I fell to the ground and let them wrap me up and pull me down. Down into the pits of darkness.
