I was still shaken from last night when I awoke. The monster, Everett, everything. Now I knew what my mom meant about life being able to scare you. I got up and put on my clothes anyways. I wanted to talk to Leah, even though we were enemies she was the only one I could talk to at the moment. There was no way I would talk to Everett. After I slipped my clothes on I went downstairs, I didn't eat breakfast today. Instead I grabbed a coat, my hat, and backpack. I skated to school. By the time I got there everyone was in their cliques and the bell was ringing. I parked my skateboard and headed in. I couldn't think in class, I noticed Leah was missing at lunch and his morning too. She must've skipped today. The only reason I didn't skip was because I was afraid Everett would find me at home. After the day was over I went downtown, I checked many places Leah would be hiding. I looked through many of the back alleys. Until I found an abandoned indoor pool/skatepark. The pool was empty besides the skateboarders everywhere. Graffiti decorated the pool walls. That's when I saw her, sitting with her legs dangled over the side of the pool. I noticed that the only thing lighting up the area was the string lights everywhere, but mostly on the sides of the pool. Leah didn't look like herself, she had a black sun hat on her head and chunky shades covering her eyes.
I sat down next to her and said, "Leah?"
"You! What the hell was that last night!?" She whisper yelled to me.
"I don't know, that's why I'm talking to you."
"You're pulling my leg, tell me the whole truth."
"Fine, I lured you in my basement saying I had drugs because Everett had planned to scare you out of harassing me everyday. I agreed but he wouldn't tell me how to scare you, he said he'd take care of it."
She sat in silence for a while before saying,
"So it's a joke? Then how do you explain that thing?
It was real, Hazel.""I doubt it, probably just a stupid mask."
"Explain this,"
she said taking off her enormous sunglasses. She revealed long scratches or cuts near her eye.
"How deep are they?" I asked with surprise.
"Deep."
"What did you tell your parents?"
"Don't worry, I said somebody attacked me on my way home through the back alleys."
"Oh, also that hat doesn't look like you."
"Well duh, it serves a purpose." She removed the hat just a little bit so I could see strands of her now white hair.
"My hair, it's turning white from fear," she continued, "oh god that mouth, tell me you saw it too."
"I don't know what I saw," I replied.
"Do you believe in the devil?"
"Excuse me?"
"I said,"
"I heard what you said, but what does that have to do with this? No I don't."
"I do, I've looked into his eyes."
Should I still be afraid of Everett? He didn't hurt anyone. I don't know what to think.
A few weeks later...
Our family was starting to come together and my dad was staying with us full time. I'd noticed changes in their habits, my mom gave up drinking? My dad was more loving, helping around the house and constantly showing affection toward my mom. As I was thinking about this I heard a light knock on my door,
"I turned it down, what do you want?" I said annoyed.
"Can I come in?"
I didn't answer her but she came in anyways. It was my mother.
"Our kooky neighbor made cupcakes for you."
"Who?"
"Constance, the neighbor lady from next door in the grey house."
"Huh."
"They're decorated with Hazelnuts."
"Clever."
"Well it's been weeks since we've had a girls night, I was thinking with you're dad out.."
"Yeah, no thanks I have homework."
"Are you mad at me?"
"You think I'm stupid mom? You can eat the cupcakes since you're eating for two now. I noticed you aren't drinking anymore and you're gaining weight in your stomach."
"I was going to tell you, I just thought you wouldn't be ready to hear it. So yes I'm pregnant."
"I knew it, you can't keep things from me mom. You aren't protecting me from anything, in fact you're just making it worse attempting to keep this from me."
"I get it, you're upset."
"Do you know the affects this will have, having a baby over 40?"
"Yes Hazel, I'm well aware."
"Then why? Do you think having a baby will keep our family together?"
"Hazel!"
"It's true."
"You know what, say your mean things!"
"I think you're weak."
She took the cupcakes and slammed the door behind her. Finally, the beast leaves. I'm sick of everyone bullshitting me. I know Everett wouldn't. Then as if on key I heard him tapping on my window with the pebbles. I rushed downstairs and opened the door for him,
"Hi."
"Hey, come in."
We went downstairs since I didn't feel like going back to my room. It's been a month since the monster incident, I forgave him and he apologized for scaring me but not Leah.
"Are you okay? You look upset Hazel."
"No, I'm not."
His arms crawled around my waist and I held him back in a sweet embrace. I felt tears stream down my cheeks and sink into his grey shirt. He squeezed me tighter and let all my worries fade away. We held each other for a few minutes until he said,
"Tell me, what happened?"
"My mom, we kind of got into a fight. She's pregnant and she tried to hide it from me."
"I'm sorry," he said looking deeply into my eyes, "that's not okay for her to hide something like that from you. If I was you I'd feel betrayed."
"It's fine."
"No it's not, I understand what it's like. You seem close to her."
"I am, most of the time."
"No offense or anything but she should be more loving towards you, even I notice her distance."
"None taken, I've known that she's been distant towards me ever since my dad came running back. She has no clue what goes on in my world."
"Well I do, and I won't ignore you."
He stroked my arm gently, I felt the chemistry in the air. Then he leaned down a bit and pressed his lips to mine. My cheeks turned red immediately, I shut my eyes and melted into him. We kissed for about a minute, I didn't want it to end. Then we had to pull away to breathe. We chuckled and then he traced his hand along my cheek, about a month ago there was a cut there. He held the cloth to my cheek then and now he touched the light scar, tracing his hand along it. The scar had almost disappeared. He leaned down again and kissed the light scar on my cheek. I giggled. The dim basement light caught in his gorgeous eyes. It was then I realized, I had a crush on him.
