As we entered the school, I remembered that I'd just stranded Emma. "Shit! Tyler, give me a minute okay? I just need to tell Emma something."
"Emma?" he asked, puzzled.
"My best friend. I just abandoned her to come and talk to you. Hold on."
I went to the gate and saw her standing in the exact same position she was before, talking to Rachel. She looked at me, and we had one of our telepathic conversations, which if they were a real thing would've gone something like this:
' Me: Sorry Em, I completely forgot you existed.
Emma: Don't sweat it. He's hot.
Me: I know right? Eye candy. See you at lunch?
Emma: Totally. And I need details, woman. '
But in reality, I looked at her, she perked her eyebrows, I smiled and she nodded with a grin. With that, I knew she understood and I went back in to find Tyler.
"That was fast." He commented, and I just gave him a smile and asked "So what now?"
"I need to find my locker and dump my stuff there before the second bell." He showed me his locker number and I led the way.
Once we were there, I leaned against the next locker while he loaded his with books.
"So are you going to ask me or do you expect me to just tell you?" he asked. I raised an eyebrow, to which he said "About why I got so emotional saying bye to my Gramma?"
A bulb switched on somewhere inside my brain and I felt embarrassed for being so caught up in his good looks that I forgot the reason I went up to him in the first place. "Oh yeah. What was that about?"
"Well, um, my parents passed away in a car crash when I was 6. Since then, Gramma and I have been living together. But she's gotten too ill recently and the doctors advised her to stay in an old age home where she can be taken care of around the clock. That meant that I needed a place to stay and our closest relatives are my mother's brother and wife who live in this neighborhood and that's why I switched schools. My uncle's the one who just dropped me off, he's on his way to drop Gramma off now so hence the tearing up. Umm... was that too much information?" he was suddenly nervous.
I hesitated before I answered. I didn't know what exactly to say. "No, that was not... I'm sorry, about your parents. I know that doesn't change anything... but I really don't know what else to say."
He smiled. "Don't be. It was a long time ago and honestly, I'm okay with it."
"That's great." I felt relieved.
"So um, Jamie, are you like.. I mean do you have.. no as in are you seeing.." he stammered and I couldn't help but laugh a bit. He looked up at me and smiled.
"No Tyler, I don't have a boyfriend."
"Thank the heavens. If you did that would've been one hell of a waste of time. I don't think I can be just friends with a beautiful girl like you."
I blushed. Then I felt like slapping myself for being so naïve, because for all I know this guy could be just another one trying to get into my panties.
"Will you go out with me, Saturday night?" he asked, and he looked so hopeful, so adorably vulnerable that I felt bad for judging him too quickly.
"Sure, why not?" I replied, and gave him a smile.
"Great, we'll discuss the details later, then?"
"Sure, Byee" I said, and I was about to back away when he swooped me into his arms and started hugging me around my waist. I was startled, but only for a millisecond before my arms wrapped around his neck. I engulfed myself in his warmness and his smell, but let go before it got weird and said our goodbyes to each other.
