I was sitting in Calc, being given lecture on God knows what. Normally, I would be trying to suck up as much information as possible due to Maths not making sense to my—what seems like—small brain. Today though, I was helping Luke not get caught by the devil—also known as Professor McWilliams. Much like my own, his eyes were heavy with fatigue, but his hangover was so bad that I could literally feel the pounding in my own skull. Every time McWilliams would look our way, I would elbow Luke in the ribs, waking him from his light slumber. He didn’t get caught “sleeping on the job” and it was fun for me to elbow him. Sometimes I would even do it a little hard.
Towards the end of our lecture, Luke’s head had fallen on my shoulder and McWilliams was asking us questions. I silently prayed that none would come our way, but when I heard her say “Luke Hemmings,” I pushed Luke off of my shoulder as quick as I could.
“Huh?” he said dumbfounded. “Oh, um—can you repeat the question?” She pointed to the black chalkboard. I could hear mumbling the problem under his breath. “x= sech y = 2/(e^y + e^-y) = 2e^y / (e^2y + 1) ---> e^2y - (1/x)e^y + 1 = 0 , use the quadratic formula ---> e^y = [1+ sqrt(1-x^2)]/x ---> y = arc sech x = ln{[1+ sqrt(1-x^2)]/x} ” He quickly answered the equation, which even my brain couldn’t process.
“Holy crap,” I whispered. Luke smirked at me, which earned him another blow to the ribs. Class ended and I had zero notes written down. If Luke doesn’t do my homework for me tonight I don’t know what I’ll do. It should be easy for him to figure it out however, not so much for me. We separately walked out of the classroom since Anne had to praise her most favored student for excellently answering the toilsome problem.
I bent down, holding my blonde hair away from the fountain as I sipped on the distasteful warm water. I felt a tap on my shoulder, which was probably Luke, so just to annoy him I took an extra few gulps. “Good God are you part fish or something?” he asked when I turned around to face him.
“That’s what they tell me.”
“Huh?”
“Never mind,” I chuckled.
Luke raised an eyebrow, but brushed it off. “I’m going to skip… Want to come with?”
I sighed. I shouldn’t be skipping, but I nodded my head and we walked to the back stairs which led to our dorms. As Luke pulled out his key to his room, I handed him my Calc homework and lazily dragged my feet down the hall. “Where are you going?” he shouted at me.
“To sleep,” I replied.
“I thought we were going to hang out?”
“Define ‘hang out.’” I unlocked my door and heard footsteps coming behind me. I motioned to the door, “Ladies first.”
Luke gave me the middle finger then collapsed in the center of the room. With one swift motion, I pulled the curtains and then also collapsed—but into my bed. My heart rate was fast. Was Luke Hemmings actually sleeping on my floor? I groan from down below answered me. “Do you have any Advil?” he asked.
“Tylenol,” I informed, bluntly. “It’s in the medicine cabinet.”
I heard him rustling on the floor and then the padding of his feet against the bathroom tile. The annoying sound of pills rolling around in their assigned bottles made me wrap my pillow around my ears. It didn’t do much to block the noise though.
“Birth control?” I could hear the smirk on his baby pink lips.
“It’s Bay’s,” I retorted. I heard him mumble something but I rolled my eyes. I just really wanted to take a nap. His muffled footsteps were coming toward me.
