The title of this book sums up the question I ask myself everyday. Before I get ahead of myself I should probably introduce myself. My name is Alex I'm 14 and I can't remember much else. I just woke up in the middle of a field and I have no idea how I got there. Well I didn't technically wake up here, it was more like I opened my eyes and BAM all I can see is grass in every direction. All of a sudden my arms were starting to feel kinda heavy so I looked down to see what I was holding. What I held in my right hand wasn't the most surprising thing it looked like I was holding an instrument case or something, but in my left I was holding a three in a half foot long silver sword. Not one of those pathetic plastic pieces of crap you can buy at Toy R Us, I'm talking about a real run you through kind of sword. Now I know most kids my age would start playing with the sword but I didn't have a death wish so I very carefully put it on the ground and decided to opened the case in my right hand. I couldn't open it without putting it on the ground so I did and bent down to undo the latches keeping it closed.
When I couldn't help but stare with my mouth opened when I looked inside the case. I don't know how I knew but I knew that the saxophone in that case was for me and me alone. I was about to get it out when I heard something behind me. It wasn't that close yet, maybe a couple hundred yards off, but I could tell it was getting closer, fast. I wasn't sure if it was going to hurt me or not but I had no intention of finding out. So I closed my case and picked up my sword, but before I ran away I wanted to make sure I wasn't running away from something stupid like a bunny so I turned around. I instantly regretted it, it was a gross monster covered with gross slime and had three eyes. In one second I discovered the vastness of my swear word vocabulary. I immediately picked the first word that popped into my head.
"Shit" I said.
Then I ran for my life, or at least that's what it felt like. I must say running for my life was a first for me, and so is everything else, but I had the odd feeling that it wouldn't be the last.
I don't now how long it took for the creature to catch me but it did eventually. I didn't so much as hear it this time, I kind of sensed that it was there you know? Probably not. Anyway right as it was running right behind me I whirled around and the next thing I knew the monster was dead and I was covered with blood. I then proceeded to freak out because I was the one bleeding, then feeling stupid, I realized that the blood was from the big hole I put in the monster's chest. For some odd reason, call it a sixth sense, I don't think the monster liked that very much. I kept walking, looking for a town or something and then I realized that most people wouldn't help a 14 year old kid with a sword covered in blood. I'd most likely end up in jail. So I found a stream to wash off, to be honest I hadn't really looked at what I was wearing till now. I was wearing a normal pair of blue jeans and a dark blue t-shirt. As I walked the stream I was looking in all directions, because who wants people to see them naked. See, I realized that I didn't even know what I looked like. Isn't that sad? So after I was done cleaning myself and letting my clothes dry I looked at my reflection in the water. I was startled to see the handsome face staring back at me, I was about to turn around to see who was behind me when I realized I was looking at myself. I'll admit that it wasn't what I expected but I'm not complaining, I made a handsome but a very, how should I put it, solemn face, like something had happened to me earlier in my life and it still haunted me. I had deep brown eyes, lightly tanned skin, and a long thin nose. When I smiled I saw perfectly lined up white teeth, but that wasn't what caught my attention first. The first thing I noticed about myself was my hair, it was bright white. Not pale blond but white.
It was really weird and unnerving to see. Especially because my eye brows are brown, so I bet I could give one awesome glare. I couldn't help but stare at myself for awhile. Soon my clothes were dry and before long I was clothed and cleanish. Without a moment to lose I was back on the road and looking for a town. I'm not sure how long I walked but eventually I saw the outline of some buildings on the horizon. By then it was almost sunset so I really needed a place to sleep. I didn't realize how small the town was until I was in it. It only had one street called Main Street, wasn't that original. The street had about maybe five houses on one side and a grocery store, a barber shop, a clothing store, and a motel.
