Later that night I was in my room like usual, listening to music. Then downstairs I heard something, a crash followed by shouting. I hastily got to my feet and shut my iPod off.
"Mom?" I said while running downstairs. "Mom?!" I yelled.
"Hazel, go back to your room someone broke in."
"What?!"
"Go back upstairs and get your phone! Dial 911!"
"Okay, okay!" I said while running to my room.
I heard my mom downstairs yelling,
"I've dialed the police, leave me alone! Stop it! I have money, please!"
I ran across my room and grabbed my phone, hitting the numbers 9-1-1.
"Hello, 9-1-1 what's your emergency?"
"Hi, my mom and I are in danger someone broke into our house."
"Alright honey, address?"
"1120 Westchester Place Country Club Park, please hurry!"
"It's okay the police have been contacted, they'll be there soon."
"Thank you," then I hung up.
Oh god what do I do what do I do! I heard something, it was coming from the hall. I had to hide, I quickly slid under my bed and curled myself up. I heard the door swing open and someone's footsteps walk around my room.
"Huh, what a waste of my time." Said a women's voice.
The footstep's left my room and back downstairs. Holy shit that was close. I crawled out from under the bed. Then I tiptoed downstairs, I could hear voices coming from somewhere else, luckily not close. Then someone bumped into me. I almost screamed but the person clasped their hand over my mouth and turned me around.
"Hazel, it's okay it's just me."
He let go of my mouth.
"Everett you scared the crap out of me, what are you doing here," then I continued, "nevermind I need help, these people broke into our house and,"
"Get them to the basement," Everett interrupted.
"What?"
"Trust me, just go!"
Everett turned away and descended into the dank basement. I quickly walked over to the room where I heard talking. The living room, the voices were in the living room. I walked a bit closer to get a better look. The floorboards creaked, oh shit.
"Hey, What was that?" One of the minions said.
"Someone grab her!" The leader yelled.
The ran after me throwing their arms out trying to catch me. I propelled myself farther and faster. But someone grabbed my arm and stopped me,
"Got her!"
"Well hurry up and get her to the tub! It's almost time!"
"Time for what?" I asked.
They didn't answer my question but instead dragged me upstairs and to the bathroom. I was handed a nurses outfit and instructed to change, and I did so, trying not to cause conflict. Another one of the women who dragged me upstairs was holding the hazelnut cupcakes, she took a bite.
"Really, you're eating?"
"It was just lying there saying eat me, I had to."
The apparent leader sighed,
"You don't even know where that's been!"
"Whatever, it tastes delicious."
I heard a grumble come from the cupcake eater,
"Oh god, I'm going to shit myself."
"Not in the staging area!"
"Don't start without me!"
"Well you shouldn't have ate the damn cupcake, it's 10:57 we're starting."
The leader left me with the cupcake eater who had finished the cupcake and was now grasping her stomach.
"Hurry up Bianca it's almost time! You have to put someone under the water for three minutes until they lose consciousness." The leader said.
Bianca must be the cupcake eater. The leader left the room and went back downstairs to join my mom and the other man.
"Get in the tub," Bianca ordered.
I remembered Everett's plan, "Get them to the basement." He had said. So I followed along.
I started laughing.
"This is funny to you?" Bianca asked.
"What's funny is how you think you know everything about this house when you clearly know nothing," I continued, "this isn't even the right tub." I snapped.
"You're wrong it's the second floor bathroom, I've studied the crime photos," she said uncertainty.
"We've totally remodeled this bathroom."
"You think I'm going to fall for that?"
"It's a grimy claw foot tub with a chrome faucet. It's in the basement, go look."
I walked her downstairs to the basement making small talk,
"This outfit is totally stupid, no wonder he hated nurses."
"I don't care how you're dressed, you better not be messing with me."
"It's down here, no no around the corner."
"It's disgusting down here, I can't see anything, where are you."
I stopped and let her wander around aimlessly then I heard Everett answer her question,
"Over here you dumb bitch. I've already got the water for you."
Everett motioned to me to leave. I ran upstairs and out the back door, meeting my mom in the front,
"Hazel, thank god you're okay!" Then she grabbed me and started running down the block, "help us, somebody help us!" She screamed. The next day my dad came back home after being in Boston. My mom was talking to him and getting mad, I was listening in on their conversation. She wanted to sell the house because she was afraid something was going to go wrong again. Apparently she thought living here is "bad for the baby."My dad was also freaking out, fretting over my mom mostly and asking about everything that happened. Then he confronted me in his office,
"Hazel, you said Everett helped you escape from those psychos. Why was he in our house?"
"How do you know about Everett?"
"He's one of my patients, now how'd he get in the house?"
"Patients? What?"
"It's not important, what I need to know right now is how he got in the house."
"I don't know dad, but he saved our lives so whatever negative thing you have to say about him is bullshit."
"Hazel..."
"What?"
"Were you hanging out with him, did you let him in?"
"No! But for whatever reason he was here I'm glad he was."
I stormed out of his office and back into my room. Everett a patient of my dad? No way! Why? I decided I would have to spy on him, maybe I could look through my father's patient's documents. That's what I'll have to do then, I'll dig through the files. Everything I need will be there, and if that fails I can always ask Everett myself.
