Tyler Dean

She said her house was the big white one on the end of the street. I'm not confused, so why do I have this weird confused feeling in my brain?

Walking up to the front porch steps, I analyze her front yard. I wasn't really sure what to expect when she said I should come to her house.

It's probably a good thing too, my parents would probably bombard her with questions, and we wouldn't have a chance to do anything.

I step up the porch. Before I knock, I peer into the little windows beside the door. Not seeing anyone, I proceed to knock.

She comes out from another room and walks in my direction. Opening the door, she smiles and leans against the wall.

"Hello, morning sunshine," I put emphasis on the word "morning". Her long, blonde hair is the perfect kind of messy and she is wearing an oversized t-shirt and polka dotted pajama pants.

"Well, I guess it's obvious I woke up sometime within the past ten minutes, isn't it?" she says jokingly. "Does that bother you?" Her hand reaches out to pinch my cheek.

"Hey, that actually hurt, you know." Rolling her eyes, she steps back to let me enter. It sure is cold in here. Also, it seems...awfully...empty.

"So your parents aren't home?" I ask. She shakes her head. "They're hardly ever home, actually. Well..." she trails off.

"What?" I question, curious. "Really it's just my mom. My parents are divorced, and my dad lives in...actually I don't know where he is now. I don't care either; he left us and that's all there is to it. I don't want anything to do with him."

I see, she's the "I've made my decision and it's final" type. If she's chosen not to like you, good luck trying to change that.

"Okay, so I have this science project that I need to finish, but I don't get the last part of it," I bring up, trying to change the subject.

She nods, going to sit down on her couch, then patting the spot next to her. "Sit."

I feel like I'm talking to a counselor for a second or two. I sit down, taking out the packet that we were given. "Oh, this is easy." "I think everything is easy for you," I grumble enviously.

"Oh, whatever," she replies, punching me lightly and playfully in the shoulder. Finally, she starts explaining.

Each carefully chosen word that leaves her mouth fits perfectly into its sentence like the pieces of a puzzle. She has a gift.

"Thanks a lot! Wait, that sounded sarcastic. I'm not being sarcastic. Thanks."

"You're welcome." There is a pause. I fill the silence. "You hungry?" I ask.

She looks at me, seeming surprised. "Can you cook or something?" The shock in her voice is almost offending. "Nope. But I'm guessing you can, right?"

Frowning, she stands up. "I hate you," she groans. I follow her lead and push myself up onto my feet. "Love you too, bae," I respond in the voice of an annoying teenage girl, returning the pinch to the cheek she gave me earlier.

With a sigh, she walks into her kitchen. I follow the leader. Opening the fridge, her frown seems to grow deeper. "There's nothing good in here," she mutters, closing the door again.

Seeing the look on my face, she saves herself. "Well, I wasn't really hungry anyway." I place my hands on her shoulders, looking her in the eyes.

"Are you completely sure?" After taking a surprised look into my pupils, she answers with a nod.

"Okay."

It's already noon. Time has passed fast. "Well, I should probably go. See you on Monday."

"Yeah, see you then." I quickly walk to her front door. At 12:15 I'm supposed to meet up with Cierra.

Hopefully she won't mind me being a little late.
