It killed quickly.
First it infected the meat. The cattle, the livestock became infected. It killed when consumed. Hundreds died. It turned animals against each other, turned pets against their owners, and people started to turn crazy from it. I guess that why they called it the Pestilence.
Then as quickly as it came, it disappeared. No one knows why. The governments said they had it under control. They quarantined everything and new measures were taken to make sure it never happened again. They covered it up as a dark time in human history. We almost forgot about it. Almost.
It struck again a year later. This time water was poisoned. It didn’t target animals though, it targeted just humans. It slowly drove people insane, the more they drank, the more they didn’t think clearly. It mutated them into savage beasts that targeted their own kind.
That war was longer than the last. It lasted a year of quarantining everybody and everything. It slowly went away. People promised that that was the last time it would kill. The last time the world would see any more of the Pestilence. They persuaded and promised.
They were wrong.
Three years later it hit again. The Pestilence was now airborne. It morphed people’s brains until they were no smarter than an ape. The foliage grew rapidly, covering whole continents in days. Kind of Mother Nature’s way of getting revenge.
It was catastrophic, whole cities burning and conquered by various plants. It infected everyone. Well, almost everyone.
A group of us teenagers weren’t affected by the Pestilence. We don’t know how and we don’t know why. We don’t really care. What matters now is that we are alive and we only have one thing left on our minds as the last civil people on earth: Survival.
My name is Landon. I’m one of the few who survived. We are scattered in groups throughout the continent. We haven’t seen any females nor adults in years. We only have our memories now.
Welcome to my life.
