My mother had been through her fair share of boyfriends throughout my life. I had seen many come and go but the only thing that stayed the same was that they were always ‘boyfriends’. Not anything more. It had been like this for over 10 years; since my father had left us, so you can imagine my surprise when she comes home announcing that she was engaged.
“What! I thought you sent Danny packing last week?” I took my glasses off and placed my book down on my bed.
“I did, this guy is new . . . and rich!” She squealed and ran out of my room with excitement and down the stairs.
“Wait Mum, Please don’t tell me you’re engaged to this man for his money.” Dear god this cannot end well. She stopped in the kitchen and swirled around to face me.
“Of course not sweetie what on earth do you think of me?” She was laughing a carefree laugh and if I was completely honest I hadn’t even met this guy and he already seemed different to the rest. Sitting down on a stool my mum sat on one opposite to me.
“So, tell me.” She giggled again and started blushing.
“Well, you know when I chucked Danny out that I went for a drink, well, I met him there. Just imagine it. It’s late at night in a fancy hotel restaurant. The lights are low and there’s is barely anymore than 6 people eating in there. Our eyes meet and the most gorgeous grin ever is pointed into my direction.” She sighed dreamily and put her head into her hand.
“Mum.” I said clicking my fingers in front of her face. “Mum!”
“Huh! Oh yeah where was I? Ah. So we were swapping the eye gestures and he eventually walks over to me and buys me a drink and we get talking. And we talk and talk and the conversation never gets dry. I’m telling you Charlie it was an instant connection. When it got to closing time he gave me his number and I gave him mine and we arranged to see each other again the next day. And now we’re here . . . Engaged!” She squealed again and ran into the living room. I ran after her laughing at her school girl behaviour.
“Mum I haven’t even met this guy.” She jumped onto the couch and lent her head onto the back of it.
“Oh but you will baby, soon. He’s wanted to meet you for a while now but I’ve been putting it off until I knew it was something serious.” She sat up properly and gently cradled my face in her hands. “I’ve been far from a good mother to you Charlie, ever since you dad left I’ve felt useless. But Mathew makes me feel like I can do something with myself. I feel reborn.”
“Mathew?” I asked smiling. She took her hands away and pulled her knees to her face to hide her blushing face. I couldn’t help but smile at the image of my mum. She truly looked like a happy women, finally.
