CHAPTER 2

Today is the Choosing Ceremony. The first day of the rest of my life.

I get out of bed and put on something nicer today because of the Ceremony. Usually I'd just wear a yellow skirt, blue top, leopard print converse and my hair in a messy bun with a print headband. Today I straightened my blonde hair and put on a light blue dress with a navy blue cardigan. I then put on my silver sandals. I slipped my studying into my bag and headed down the stairs to my family, who had started breakfast.

My brother was on his phone while simultaneously eating his cereal. My father was reading the newspaper with a piece of toast on his plate and a half eaten one in his hand, getting crumbs on his navy suit. My mother had a blue dressing gown on and was making waffles for me.

'Thanks Mum!' I say as she hands me my plate with two. She sits down and eats, reading the news on an app on her tablet, developed by my dad's company.

I think about the day today. Class, class, break, class, class, lunch, class, Choosing Ceremony.

I keep eating and I'm soon done. I get my bag off the table and kiss my dad good bye.

'See you at the Choosing Ceremony!' He says and I nod. I go to kiss mum, and she pulls me into a hug. It's nice and loving. One of the best kind of hugs.

'No matter what you decided to do, we will always love you!' She says. And then pulls me back into a hug. I pull out after some time.

'No need to worry, it's pretty obvious where I'll be staying.' I say grinning. So does mum. I give her a kiss and then grab my lunch. She walks me to the door and I give her one last hug, waving as I walk to the bus stop. She blows me a kiss as I walk out of her door, and I do the same.

I meet Amelia at the train stop. She's talking to some other girls, but then comes to talk to me. She looks like her usual self today. Perky, fun and happy-go-lucky.

'Hey Penny.' She says

'Its PENELOPE! Pen-El-OP-Ee!!' I exclaim jokingly. 'And hello' She smiles, and so do I. Then stands next to me and whispers in my ears and points to a Dauntless guy about a year older with dark brown hair. He's talking to his Dauntless companions.

'What do you think of him?' She whispers, pointing.

'I think what I think about all your crushes. They're pointless. I mean, yeh he's cute, but he's Dauntless and we're Erudite. There's no point.' I reply, not bothering to whisper into her ear.

'Says you. It's alright for you to have a crush on Jay-Den!' Amelia says, exaggerating his name.

'I DO NOT have a crush on Jayden! He's just a guy I study with!' I protest.

'Yeh, yeh, just a guy. Fine. I guess you wouldn't care if I told you he's into you!'

'What! He does?!?' I say interested.

'HA! Got you, you SO care!' She says, like she's won. I just roll my eyes. This isn't what most stereotypical other factions would think. The Erudite -the smartest faction- thinking about boys. But when you think about it, all faction -and even factionless- girls talk about boys. Except of course, the Abnegation. I change the subject.

'Excited about the Choosing Ceremony?' I ask.

'Well, more nervous then excited, although it's obvious where I'll stay.' We both giggle. Faction before blood is a term we both believe in. When we stay in Erudite, we're with our true faction and family.

The train comes to a squeaky stop and everyone gets on. Amelia and I sit together, and just talk about my non-crush on Jayden.

The rest of the day is boring and fast, and most people aren't even paying attention to the teachers because of the Ceremony. Recess and Lunch seem to go faster then usual, and before we know it, it's time to get on the trains to go to the Hub at Sears Towers. All of the different factions wearing different colours form a sea of colour as everyone but the Abnegation get on the train. The Dauntless climb and ride on stop of the bus, and no one stops them. I sit next to Amelia, but there isn't much time to talk because we reach the Hub in a short amount of time.

Everyone gets off and we're escorted in and given our seats, the parents are already there, sitting with other parents in the same faction in the inner circle. I see my parents and briefly smile as they wave. All of the Erudite are given a robe before we sit. It makes us look more neat and tidy. I'm lucky to sit next to Amelia.

10 minutes later the Ceremony begins. The Abnegation host walks up. I picture myself standing there for Erudite for some reason, looking at everyone while I am the only person onstage. I hand each soon-to-be initiate a new knife. Knife after knife after knife.

'Welcome people to this splendid occasion where you begin your new life. Or for others, your life continues. After this you will truly be accepted into society. Faction before blood.'

'Faction before blood' Everyone replies

I recognise the host from chapters called 'Abnegation Leaders' in my Faction History book. His name is Marcus Eaton. His son abandoned him and went to Dauntless. I don't remember his name. I think it was Toby or something.

Marcus begins to read out names.

'Jonathon Zieglier'

He steps forward. I can't remember what he chose. I'm in a different place

'Jeffrey Yates'; 'Morgan Stokes'; 'Claire Satron'; 'Sam Robertson'; 'Celeb Prior'; 'Beatrice Prior'; 'Emily Colbat'; 'Amber Sums'; 'Bridget Sums'.

'Amelia Alborn' I smile weakly at her and squeeze her hand as she gets up and walks towards the stage. She quickly cuts her hand, and the droplet of blood enters the Erudite bowl. I smile proudly for her and clap loudly. She herself lets out a smile as she walks back to me. We smile at each other.

'Its not bad' she quietly whispers. I nod to signify that I heard her.

'Jayden File' Marcus says. I watch Jayden walk up to the bowls, but not too intently because it would only give satisfaction to Amelia. Jayden picks up the knife and cuts it into his hand. He looks at both the Erudite and Dauntless bowl, but then puts his hand over the Dauntless as soon as the droplet is formed. He breathes a sigh of relief and walks to the Dauntless seats. They are clapping louder than any faction, and pump their fists into the air.

Amelia gives me a bit of a hug, because we both know I kinda had a little thing for him. I rest my head oner shoulder.

'Albert Pan'; 'Louis Snow'; 'Gabrielle Budge'.

'Penelope Penderghast.' Marcus says.

I tense up with nerves.
