I can't handle when people call me by that name. It's just painful; it sets the hole in my heart on fire, a burning rage speeding through my veins.
I walk across the park, passing through the middle of soccer and football games, earning myself some annoyed glances.
I'm almost to the other side when someone taps me on the shoulder.
"Are you okay?" Sandrina's voice asks from behind me.
"Yeah. I just need to think." I respond in a low voice, continuing on to the far end of the field.
I drop down into the grass, laying back to watch the clouds. The blue of the sky reminds me of that dress. Her favorite dress. The Buddy Bench dress.
"I miss you, Willnia." I whisper, plucking blades of grass restlessly. "I need you right now." My hands ball up into fists and tears threaten to fall. "Please."###
I'm startled from my daze by a soccer ball rolling into my foot. I sit up to see Kennedy standing above me, the ball under her sneaker.
"Come play with us." she invites. By "us", she means her, Kyle, Sandrina, Kayla, Kasey, and Shawn.
"Um, sure, I guess." I sigh as I get up.
Kennedy starts the game off by kicking the ball to Sandrina, who has to stretch her leg far to the right to catch it with her foot. She then passes it to Kayla, who gives it a solid kick toward me. It hits my leg with a hard thump, and I bend down to hold my leg. That'll be a bruise tomorrow.
"Ow!" I laugh, cradling my lower leg. The ball had bounced off and Shawn chased after it, kicking it to Kyle, who now passes to Kennedy.
We continue on this way for a while, until we're all tired. After that we just sit in a circle on the ground, chatting and laughing like nothing is wrong.
But, in my heart, everything is wrong.###
I don't have any reason to be doing this.
I grunt as I heft an armful of Sun Chips up a flight of stairs in the dark.
I told my parents I was spending the night at Shawn's. Little do they know I'm still at school.
The last time I slept in the science lab was about a month ago, with Willnia.
The moonlight shines through the window in the back room as I unload the chips onto the counter. I sit on the floor and lean against the cabinet doors across from the window. I can see the moon perfectly.
Come to think of it, the moon reminds me of her. It's so bright and lively, a light in the unrelenting darkness.
"Can you hear me, Willnia?" I ask the silence, not expecting a reply. "Can you see me?"
I imagine her, in her flowing dress, bathed in shadows. She glows with an inner light.
My little clair de lune.
