I should've known this would happen. I always figured he'd find his way back to Willnia somehow.
I just didn't think it would be today.
I can't stop the horror spreading across my face as I watch Wilson's lips curl into a devious smirk. My hands get clammy---clammier than they were before from standing so close to Kyle---as I see Wilson's eyes.
His pupils are dilated, because he sees something he really wants---the vials. A look of lovestruck evil, hinted with blossoming insanity, shines in those eyes.
We had him for a while, and now he's gone again---but not to the same place. He's somewhere else, somewhere he's never been. I can't let him stay there or we'll lose him for good.
When Mme Godreau stops talking and starts to gather some stuff to pass out to us for the experiment, I throw another glance at Wilson. He's still got that wretched smirk on his face. I shudder slightly and lean over the table a little.
"Wilson." I say in a low voice. He flits his eyes over to stare at me. I scrunch my eyebrows together confusedly. "Why are you looking at me so creepily?"
"What do you mean?" he asks almost monotonously.
"With the eyes and the smirk and the weird robot voice. What's with you all of a sudden?" I question.
I know exactly what's with him.
"Oh, I'm just...excited." he answers vaguely.
"For?" I press.
"The, uh, the experiment." he stutters, grin faltering.
"If you say so."
Throughout the whole class, Wilson kept that same mischievous look plastered on his face, and it unnerved me to see him watch the vials, unblinking, as I poured each chemical into the beaker. He stared at the purple hue of the mixture, smile growing as the light danced within.
In the end, the unmelting snow did work, and it was pretty cool.
It's just...I still can't get the image of Wilson's devilishly insane gaze out of my head.
I swear, his eyes would turn purple if he had stared at that mixture any harder.
"That was a cool experiment." I say, attempting to make small talk with Wilson on the walk back to the classroom.
"Yeah." he responds, clenching and unclenching his fists at his sides. The corners of his mouth twitch into a gradual smile. I shiver. "I guess you were wrong about those chemicals. They do still have some." he remarks, giving me a sideways glance.
"Yeah, I guess so." I wring my hands nervously at his tone.
"We can spawn the portal again." he suggests.
"Um, I still don't think that's a good idea." I dare to say. He stops dead in his tracks and glares at me.
"Why? What do you have against Willnia?" he challenges, stepping closer to get right up in my face.
"I...nothing! I think it's a bad idea because our tethers were probably worn down the last time we were there."
"I thought you said our tethers were stronger, and would regenerate when we got back here."
"I did, but I left out a crucial part that I just recently discovered. I had been investigating other dimensions in a book---the book I got the original information from---and found out that if two things from other dimensions get too attached to eachother, their tethers become one." I explain. "You got really attached to Willnia, and her to you, so her tether and yours are joined. So, if she is brought here and starts to deteriorate, you will as well, and vice versa."
Wilson pauses to think this over. "Then why couldn't I just visit her for one day?"
"We can't risk it. A joined tether deteriorates much quicker and takes much longer to regenerate than any ordinary tether. I have no idea how long you two could last. It's better to be safe than sorry." I point out. He huffs in disappointment.
"I guess you're right. I still wanna see her, though. Someday..." he trails off with a growing smirk.
Shuddering, I gesture for him to follow me down the hallway. "Come on. We have to get back to class."
