The sound of the door closing sealed the last place of safety we had, making me grow more paranoid by the minute. Mia and I nodded to eachother silently as we slowly and quietly trekked down the seemingly endless corridor. The silence was horrifying, the suspense of potential doom made my legs weak, but I continued foward. Everything was quiet, until the sound of snarling made us both stop dead in our tracks. I spun around slowly, our eyes met.

It was the woman, the woman from the lobby, standing in the archway of the stairwell, blood and a pale yellow liquid ran down her lips, she let out a groan, her eyes locked on me.

"Holy shit.." Mia muttered, taking a step back from the disheveled woman. I couldn't move, and before Mia could help me get out of my paralysed state, the woman ran foward, screaming and tackling me onto the carpet floor, I screamed, she was surprisingly strong for someone so skinny. The woman's teeth suddenly sank into my arm, I screamed in agony, feeling the warm blood run down the wound, I shut my eyes, I was going to die, this was the end, I will never see anyone again.

Whack!

"Get the hell off!" Mia screamed, I looked up, seeing her foot collide with the face of the woman, causing her to stumble and fall backwards, Mia grabbed my arm, yanking me up, I groaned in pain as she practically dragged me foward.

"Come on!" She called, taking off toward the stairs to the exit.

I ran after her, the infected woman not too far behind, I could almost feel her nails graze my back as I caught up to Mia, we continued to run until we reached the stairs, we almost fell down them and reached the large metal doors where we nearly threw ourselves out into the parking lot. We could hear a loud bang, then silence. The woman obviously wasn't after us anymore.

"Oh my god." Mia huffed out, trying to catch her breath as she rested her hands on her knees. She finally looked up at me, noticing the wound that had stained my white Nirvana tee. She gasped, and removed her tee shirt that was worn over her tank top. She wrapped it over the wound, and as she pulled it tight, I cried out again.

"This will stop the bleeding, I hope."

In the midst of all of this, I gasped, quickly turning to Mia.

"What if she gave me something?! We need to go home." I cried out, the virus was contagious through a bite, and she definitely bit me. I began to panic, I knew this would happen, if we had just stayed inside, this wouldn't have.

"No, what we need is to get you to the hospital." Mia grabbed the luggage, and began walking toward the car, she unlocked it, popping the trunk as she threw the bags inside, before closing it again. She got into the driver's seat.

"Come on." She called out, shutting the door. I weakly made my way to the passenger side, and nearly fell into it, I shut the door, and leaned back, everything hurt, the worst pain I had ever felt. The engine of the car revved, then stopped. A few more times it did the same thing, followed by Mia's groaning in annoyance.

"Damn it, you rusty machine!" Mia screamed, slamming her hand on the dashboard as she turned the key another few times. The car roared to life on the eighth try, and Mia pulled out of the desolate parking lot almost immediately. The drive was smooth, the hospital couldn't have been too far. I felt weak, probably blood loss, even with the pressure, the bleeding from before was a large amount, which wasn't good at all, I felt like I had to vomit, but I didn't.

"You alright?" Mia asked, eyes still fixed on the road, every so often swerving past an infected stranger or two that roamed the streets. I couldn't speak, I made a few slurred noises as everything was blurry, I felt ringing in my ears.

"Ashley! Are you okay?!" Mia yelled again. Suddenly, the world went dark as I fell into unconsiousness.

---

"Ashley!"

My eyes flew open, I frantically turned my attention to Mia, her face twisted into concern.

"Where are we..?" I murmured.

Mia sighed a breath of relief and sat back in her seat, she looked down for moment.

"The hospital, it was full of them, I had to drive away. I stopped at this store, I can hopefully find you bandages and alcohol to clean the wound."

This was so much to take in.
Why haven't the SWAT fought these things? I thought, brushing my hair off of my shoulders with my free hand.

"Do you feel..different?" Mia folded her hands in her lap, I marveled at her, she had never showed so much worry in all the time I had known her. I stared out of the window, fall leaves falling from the trees above the dry grass.

"No. In fact, I feel fine, excluding the pain."

"That's..odd."

"What do you mean?" I glanced at her.

"Well, I read up an article on the virus, the symptoms usually show ten minutes after infection."

My eyebrows arched in confusion, this was weird.

"It's been an hour, Ash."

My eyes widened, I wasn't affected by this? Was I immune? I took a moment to think, I must be unaffected by this. I never usually caught colds as a child, probably due to my immune system. But to a disease like this? I never would have thought it was this strong.

"So.. I'm immune to the disease?"

Mia nodded, before giving a half-witted smile, her hands still folded on her lap.

"This is really good, though. You are immune to the most dangerous sickness right now! This is big!" She was smiling even more now, before turning to look out of the window.

"Alright, I'm going to get some things, stay here, you need to rest."

I hesitated, but gave in and leaned back as Mia exited the car, shutting and locking the door behind her. I watched her enter the store, and dissapear into the place. I closed my eyes, I felt so tired, I wanted to be home, sleeping in my bed, in my room. Not in some hotel in the other side of town, or a car. I just wanted to see my family.

I eventually dozed off, and fell asleep once more.
