I tense up with nerves.

I give one last weak smile to Amelia as I walk up. It seems to take forever to walk down with all of the stares.

I finally reach the bowls and get the knife from Marcus. I cut my hand. The knife is so sharp it doesn't even hurt.

I wait for the droplet to form and then put it over the Erudite bowl of water. The droplet drops and the water turns red.

'Erudite' Marcus says to everyone. I hold my hand and smile proudly at my faction and see my parents clapping more than others. I walk back to my seat next to Amelia.

'You're right, it's not that bad.' I say to her. Then we watch everyone else. Name after name after name.

I'm on the train home. Amelia had to stay at school for an after school club. I watch the trees, buildings and people go by as I quickly go by them. I get off and pass a few factionless with signs reading:

'Factionless. Please spare food or money'

I take out some biscuits in a packet and throw it to a man with ripped clothes from a large distance. He says thank you and I just nod.

I'm about 5 minutes from home, and I reach it even quicker today. My parents are already home.

'CONGRATULATIONS!' Mum, Dad and Josh (my little brother) all scream at me, holding up a blue sign that reads 'Congratulations on Erudite!' I can't help but smile and blush.

'We made and decorated cupcakes!' They all say proudly.

'Chocolate?' I ask

'Always!' They reply. I hang my bag up and head towards the kitchen with my family.

'So. Were you nervous going up there?' Josh asks. It'll be his turn next year, and like a Erudite, he's curious.

'Yes, definitely. All of those people staring.' I reply

'What about the knife?'

'Um. Well, it didn't hurt as much as you would think because it's so sharp.'

'Ok.' He seems to have run out of questions.

'How was school?' I ask, to break the silence 'Didn't you say you were getting results back today for something?'

'Yeh. I got my results back for mathematics. I got 83%.'

'Well Done, Josh!' My mother and father say.

'Thanks.' He says. He's a lot more humble than me. 'Can I ask some friends to come over?'

'Sure, go organise some stuff.' Dad says, and Josh runs up to his room.

'Can I invite Amelia and we can go shopping. We're both quite stressed about initiation and stuff.' I ask them, giving them my 'please, please, pleassseee' face.

'Sure, and don't stress about initiation. I'll give you some advice, if you get less than 20% on multiple tests, you're definitely out. If you get between 20% and 50%, there's a 'probably not' chance that you'll get in. If you get between 50% and 70%, you're most likely in. If you get above 70%, you're definitely in. And you've scored at least 76% on all you're tests, that lousy 61% you once got doesn't really count because it was announced that the test would be the very next day with no warning and you couldn't study because of your Uncles birthday. Trust me, if me and your father could get in, you'll have no trouble what-so-ever!' Mum says.

'Thanks mum. I'm going to go book me and Amelia a spa, I've been saving up! I'll leave her a message for after her club meeting.' I say, and mum nods. I run up to my room.

'Hey Amelia. Wanna go to a spa after your meeting. We can both pay half?' -Penelope.

Half an a hour later she replies.

'Sounds like fun, meet you there in 15?' -Amelia

'Sure! See you there!'-Penelope

Amelia's status changes to 'BUSY' and so does mine. I get changed out of the robe and dress and cardigan, which I hang in my wardrobe and change into something more casual. Light blue denim high waisted shorts and a grey singlet with a fading blue lion on the front to be exact. I put my hair in a messy bun and put on my glasses and black shoes. I gather everything I need into a small blue bag which just goes over my shoulder. I take it everywhere.

'Phone, purse, ummm.' I think, trying to gather everything, when that's really all I need. (And that's all I'll fit in my bag)

I put in over my shoulder, walk down stairs, kiss my parents good bye and leave through the front door, almost forgetting my keys.

'See you all in a few hours!' I say to anyone that will listen just before I close the door. 'I might go to the library to study.' I quickly add. I shut the door once and for all and leave. I text Amelia to let her know I'm going. Luckily the shopping centre is only a few minutes away by train.

'On my way to the train stop, see you in a bit.' -Penelope

She replies almost immediately.

'Okay, see you. Might even see you on the train.' -Amelia

I wait only a few minutes for the train -luckily- and then I reach the shopping centre in just a few more. I wait patiently for Amelia.
