Rain

It began in the rain. Heavy droplets fell upon my freckled cheeks, darkening the edge of my shirt collar to patches of the richest red wine. The tantalizing mixture of fresh cut flowers and strawberry cheesecake danced through the air.

Three unforgettable coincidences happened at that moment:

A tabby cat ran out into the street, skittish from the water, directly into the line of an oncoming Volkswagon.

A child followed it with chubby fingers reaching for its tail - his mother raising a coffee mug to her painted lips, eyes elsewhere.

The girl with the knitted scarf in front of the bookstore held out her hand with eyes widening in horror.

Then, suddenly and miraculously, the child and cat were back at the coffee shop, playing together by the woman's shoes - the girl now collapsed on the sidewalk with the rain soaking her still form.

"Oh!  Oh no, what happened?" an elderly woman asked in a huff while her husband fiddled with his mahogany pipe.

"She just collapsed," the greying man stated between puffs of smoke.

"Quick, help her up Matthew!" the elderly couple shook the girl's shoulders until her eyes fluttered open.

"Dear, are you alright? Should we call an ambulance?" worry tightened the corners of the old woman's wrinkled lips.

The girl just smiled and raised a grazed hand to her forehead, "Oh, silly me, I must've tripped. I'm very clumsy, you see."

The old couple chuckled together and helped to her feet, believing her without a second thought. They spoke for a bit and then went their separate ways as if nothing eventful had happened.

But I saw it - I saw it all.
