Melanie was sitting in her bedroom, feeling bored with no one else in the house.
She grabbed her dolls, a hairbrush and her sippy cups. She walked down the stairs and set her items down on the living room floor and ran into the kitchen to grab her tray of cookies. She sat down fixing her pretty baby blue dress and robe and flipped through the television channels until she found something that looked quite interesting.
She began watching the television and brushing her dolls hair while a man on TV was advertising women's beauty products. There was a beautiful girl with a perfectly normal sized body and a small bust opening a small orange bottle with Betty's Diet Pills inside. "Have you gained a few pounds and wish you hadn't? Try Betty's Diet Pills to lose that extra weight and become a man magnet in days!" A man said.
The girl took a pill out and held it in front of her face in awe. She put the pill in her mouth and swallowed it dry. In seconds, she was even thinner than she was and looked way happier than before she took the diet pill.
Melanie looked down at her body and compared it to the girl on TV. Her body was most definitely not like that woman's. Melanie set down the cookie she had just been eating.
A new commercial came on the screen advertising Betty's Blonde Wigs. A woman with really short brunette hair was standing in front of a display of blonde wigs. She looked around the table as if trying to decide which one to wear. "Tired of the same old look?" The ad man said "then, purchase one of Betty's Blonde Wigs today for a beautiful, blonde style!" Melanie didn't have any blonde hair and was now wishing that she did. She only had black hair.
The woman on the screen chose a short, curly blonde wig with bangs. She put it on, added a hat and she winked at the camera. "Betty's Blonde Wigs come in a different variety of styles. Curly and straight. Long and short. And for only $19.99!"
Melanie was tearing up at the site of all of these beautiful, skinny, blue eyed, blonde haired girls on the advertisements. She looked nothing like them and was getting the idea that you had to look like those girls to be loved.
Melanie ran up to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. She reached over, grabbed tissues and started stuffing her shirt. She was smiling at what she saw. Then, she remebered her mom had diet pills in the drug cabinet behind the mirror. She popped open the lid and took 3 at a time, dry. She was breathing heavily and crying but had a smile on her face. At least, she was trying to smile.
She then took one of her mom's blonde wigs and pulled it right over her natural hair and fixed it up, the makeup she played with running down her face from tears. She found a dark pink lipstick and smeared it over her lips over and over, still crying but smiling at the same time. She looked in the mirror once more before leaving and saw what she thought was pretty.
She entered the living room making quiet steps and plopped down on the carpet. She was trying her best to smile which turned into a laughing-crying smile on her face. Black makeup was all over her cheeks from the ocean coming from her brown eyes. She grabbed the TV remote and flipped to a different channel, only to experience something that was heartbreaking.
