"Everything's going to be okay. We're just gonna run to the river and the bad people will leave." She was running, the person I called my mother.
We were always running. We had had no pack, it was just us. We were poor and whenever we had something nice someone always wanted to take it from us.
My mom always carried a bow and arrow, I wasn't allowed to touch them though. She said they were special and that only she could touch them or I would be burned.
I was, young, clueless and foolish. I couldn't help her...I couldn't help us. I nodded as we neared the river.
A smile crossed her face and when she was happy, I was happy too. She stopped moving and I looked up at her hoping for the best, but only to receive the worst.
An arrow drove through her chest. She collapsed onto her knees by the river. "Zachary-"
"Mom?"
"Listen to me, go across the river and pass the big oak tree. They won't find you there. If you're not too tired run, run to the east end." She started panting and gasping. "No, no. I'm gonna find you some help."
Little ten year old me... I helped her up and put her arm around my shoulder, she was much taller than me so it was gonna be a struggle.
I heard footsteps behind us and the only thing I could do was cry. "I'm gonna save you, everything's going to be okay." I copied what she said earlier.
With no plan, I went straight into the river. I stumbled a lot and fell a few times, but I pulled her along with me and when I fell and almost went under she tried her best to pull me up. "See we made it." I said as we reached he other side.
I looked up and my mom's lifeless body fell to the ground. "Mommy?" I shook her "It's time to wake up. The bad men are gone." I pulled the arrow out and threw it. "Please wake up."
I looked down the path and saw the big oak tree. I tried my best to pick her back up and lead her to the tree. "Look, the big oak tree!" I smiled and looked at her to see if she had heard me. Nothing.
I put her down by the tree. "I don't know what to do. I'd give anything to save you," I put my hand on the hole in her chest to stop the bleeding.
"Berries, leaves, and lots of other things give you the best healing." I remembered a rhyme that my father had taught me. "Berries," I stood up and looked around, venturing off into the forest to find them "If you find you're running out of time throw in a lime. One little tear and the person you love dear will live again."
I gathered some of the materials or what I could find and headed back to her. I kneeled next to her and dropped the materials in front of me.
I ripped the bottom piece of my shirt and picked up a rock. I crushed the berries and some of the wild mint leaves I found.
I put them on the cloth and looked around for a lime "Lime..." I stood up and looked around "Need help?" I quickly turned around and saw a flying lady "I'm a tree nymph. I won't hurt you." She stood next to the concoction I had been making.
"This won't do, you need magic. Nothing in this forest works without magic. I can help your mother under one condition-"
"I'll do it." I walked over to her "Very well, when you grow up you will become a king, you will fall in love and then everything will be taken from you and you'll go back to your old life. Whether the love of your life chooses to stay with you or not is up to them. Every wish comes with a consequence." I nodded and she stepped back and I stood by my mother.
"Help her. My mother is my happiness." She whispered something to the tree and the tree leaves glittered. She took one and handed it to me and I put it on the hole in her chest "I only need one?" The nymph nodded.
Her eyes opened and she looked at me "Zachary?" She held my face and hugged me "I'm so proud of you, I love you so much." She cried and the nymph chuckled and she quickly pulled away from me. She stood up and pushed me behind her, taking an arrow out of her pocket and taking the bow off of her back, aiming at the nymph. "Don't hurt her, she saved you!" She lowered her bow and looked at me. "You made a deal with her?" I nodded "Never make a deal with a Nymph. They took your father from us."
"A deal is a deal." The nymph said and disappeared. My mom cried and hugged me. "Thank you Zachary, but next time let what happens, happen." She held my shoulders "They took dad?"
Present day
"King are you sure this necessary? You've just been called into office making such drastic changes-"
"I said what I said and I meant it. Cut down all the oak trees on the east end of the forest, whether there on our land or not."
"Yes your majesty." My beta walked out and I looked at my crown. A gust of wind blew the papers on my desk and I put my crown down and looked at the being standing in front of me. The nymph.
"You can't cut down our trees."
"But I am."
"I'll make another deal with you."
"Haven't you done enough?!" I got up and pushed my desk and she backed away "Yes... let's make another deal," I chuckled. I walked towards her and she backed into a wall "Tell me where my father is and I'll stop cutting down your trees."
"In return you'll become even more of a heartless bastard, it'll be pretty hard to call yourself a king." She tried to get me to back away.
"Try me."
"He was taken and he's somewhere. Now as I've said once and I'll say it again, a deal is a deal."
"You don't understand everyday my mother wakes up, she thinks about that day in the forest. She thinks about the multiple deals she's made and how I made one to save her. I made a mistake so...Tell. Me. Where. He. Is." She disappeared and I snarled "Jonah!" My beta walked in "Stop cutting the trees. We've got bigger matters to discuss. We'll go through with the switch later so I can find the girl. If I can't stop what's bound to happen, I can definitely avoid it." He nodded and walked out. I put my crown on and walked out of my office. "Let's make this worth my while."
