I thought I knew her, but did I? Her wide smile portrayed happiness, but is that what she truly felt?  Her perfectly manicured thick chocolate brown eyebrows framed her beautiful eyes. Eyes that change from gray to blue, blue to green— they change, just like her. She longs for familiarity, like the denim blue coloured ring that surrounds her iris and the flakes of gold settling around her pupil. However, what I can't see, is behind her eyes; what goes on in the pretty little head of hers? Her smile, it doesn't reach her eyes— looking closer i see that now. They hold her past, the things that scare her, her future. The truth.  Her past is complicated, it left her broken, barely holding on. The torture from her childhood scarred her deeply; her too large slightly crooked nose. Her perfectly straight teeth but only due to the metal that strung across them slowly molding them to "perfection". Even the slight unevenness of her blushed lips, how the bottom is unnoticeably larger than the top. Her face, it's a heart— a heart that has never been filled but is yearning to be. Her olive coloured skin full of imperfections that no one but her can see; always camouflaged by the mask that she slathers on every morning— never missing a day. Her long hair, golden from the sun, cascading over her shoulders falling into flawless precise curls at the bottom of her spine.

But she hates it. She hates it all. But no one looked deep enough to see it and she smiles through it all. Everything. No one realizes her insecurities that haunt her at night when she's trying to sleep. No one knows how lost she feels. And everyone feels like they know her, but simply just know the mask that she puts on.

Too soon we figured it out, we all did. The scars that we caused her, deep inside and even breaking the surface of her skin. The blood that she bathed in proved it. Her naked face, untouched. Her once amazing eyes, now dull and lifeless. Now everyone sees through her act. All furious at themselves about how they couldn't see it before. She was not okay, and she never will be again.
