Me and my brother were put in the kitchen, while all the adults did some adult things in the living room. They said we were "too young" for whatever they were doing, but I disagreed. This year i was much older, and at seven years old with my brother at nine, we were surely old enough to join in. Anyway, it was Christmas! Just how many years would it be before they let us join in with the rest of the family, our family?
Varian tugged on my sleeve.

"What?" I asked grumpily.

"I got your present Mer!" Varian announced, and passed it to me. Before I could open it, or even thank Varian, our cousin walked into the room.

"Hey kids." He ruffled Varian's already messy hair and ticked my neck.

"Stop!" I squealed, giggling because I am very ticklish and our cousin Hamish knew it. I dropped my present from Varian and rolled away from Hamish, to the safety of a corner. He laughed and sat down on the floor.

Hamish was a very tall adult. He was twenty-one years old. Twenty-one! That's loads! Five times my age!

Suddenly and unexpectedly, a loud ringing burst out. It was very loud and hurt my ears, so I covered them. Varian was so shocked by the noise that he started almost crying, and I hugged him, then went into the hall with my ears covered to investigate.

Because my ears were covered, I didn't hear what Hamish yelled at me, but all I noticed was him running out of the house, yelling something at me. The air was filled with smoke for some reason, and I have to stop covering my ears to cough. I opened the door to the living room, and a huge orange and red flame whooshed up in front of me. I screamed loudly, and the heat was already making me sweat, not to mention the smoke choking me.

I had to get out.

I ran for the door and had my hand on the handle when I realised that Varian was still in the kitchen. I had to get to him! I rushed to the kitchen, not feeling the flame licking at my skin, focused on getting my brother safely out.

There! On the floor, lying on his side, his sleeve on fire. I stood on his sleeve until it went out, and then started pulling him along.

"Come," I coughed, "on!"

I was nearing the door, I had to be, and I could feel pain in me. Someone, I think it was Hamish, was screaming my name, screaming at me to run and leave Varian.

No! I couldn't! I tried to call this back, but ended up coughing instead. Outside. I needed to get us outside. It felt like an age in that house, yanking my brother along desperately, the flames chasing us along the corridor.

To say I made it in the nick of time is an understatement. I literally just pulled him out of the front door before I collapsed myself. Someone was lifting me up, running me around somewhere. I didn't know what was going on.

Before I passed out, I managed to get out a word. His name.

"V-Varian." My voice trailed off, and I lost consciousness, time slowing and stopping around me.
