ok so I had to write a thing for school about 'discovery' but then I got attached to the characters so I guess they're my new OCs now? (I'm going to paste the story below if you guys wanna read my attempt at writing - it's about 1.3k words)

the '''story''''' is in the perspective of Wilfred for whom I have yet to think of a last name:

There's no planet like home

Recorded footage and messages found by explorers for the New World in a memory chip recovered from a derelict research station half swallowed in dirt and overgrown with moss. Some files have been corrupted.

[Transcript, Captain's log: sol 1, broadcasted to Earth]

Hello, it's me, your captain and only crew member speaking. After my successful landing on THERA 8402 twelve hours ago, I have established a base and am setting up all of the necessary apparatus. The water purification kit and cone penetrometer are proving to be a hassle but they won't be for much longer - I think I have them figured out. My first impressions of this place are very positive - my tests have revealed that the atmosphere here is much like that of Earth and I have already found a source of freshwater. I have begun preliminary testing on local flora, and will soon have readings on the soil and more in-depth analyses of the water and atmosphere. Even though THERA 8402 is further from the sun than Earth, the temperature is mild and I have even begun to sweat a little in this gear. The days are shorter here and from my calculations, it should be night again in little over an hour. I do hope it doesn't rain overnight or else all my equipment will be damaged irreparably! So far I have seen no signs of intelligent life on this planet though I think i saw a herd of what looked like deer off in the distance a while ago. The immediate terrain I have landed in is quite flat with gently rolling plains so if all goes well, the land may be suitable for growing crops! As soon as all of my tests are complete, I will return with my findings but until then, it seems like I will have this strange new paradise all to myself.

Max! Maker, it feels like it's been so long since we last spoke to each other - so much has changed! So much to see, so much to do; I am honestly being overwhelmed by all the research I've been doing here. Don't get me wrong though, I'm having the time of my life and if I had a choice, I'd probably never want to leave. If only you were here! All the things I could show you - huge (and I mean HUGE) animals, a lagoon near my base with the clearest water I have ever seen and the birds Max, the birds with their magnificent plumage and beautiful calls that make me forget that there is nobody here to talk to. It really is such a shame that no one else could come on this mission because this place seriously is the embodiment of heaven! And to think that they were skeptical about my plans for a colony here... But how is your work going? Keep me posted with all the scandals!
