The first thing I did was wait for my father to leave, he was going out with my mother tonight. As soon as I heard the front door close I rushed downstairs and into the office. After my dad had been back in our family for a month he'd made himself quite comfortable. His office was full of documents spread about his desk. Books filled the bookshelves and files were practically popping out of the file cabinet. Where do I even start? The laptop sitting on top of his desk was open, it spring to life when I wiggled the mouse. But there was a problem, he had a password. Oh well I'll just have to go through every single document. I opened the file cabinet next, there were three drawers. I opened the first one to reveal tons of files with tabs marked in order of the alphabet. There must've been thousands! This would take forever. I looked in the E's for Everett's name. After hours of searching I found it, immediately I opened the file and skimmed through it. There was only two papers with medical stuff and pen marks all over one sheet from my dad. But before I could look more thoroughly I heard the front door open.
"Shit," I mumbled.
I heard talking in the kitchen. I scurried to pick all the files up and place them in the cabinet. I didn't have enough time to organize them all. I shut the cabinet softly and tip-toe ran to my room. I hoped my dad wouldn't notice the files being out of place. Who am I kidding the next time he has a patient with the letter E he'll definitely notice. I'll just blame it on Hallie, our dog. I softly closed the door behind me and sank to the floor breathing heavily. I've done it! However the bits I found seem to be bullshit. It said Everett had violent dreams and fears of hurting himself or others. There was no way these were true. Everett wouldn't hurt me, he's obviously misjudged and his mom is probably just strict. I decided to ignore my whole expedition's findings. I'll just ask Everett myself, I can get real answers that way. I curled up on my bed and fell asleep. The next morning I watched my dad as I passed through the halls. I waited until he left his office to get his patient, which would be Everett. Then I hid in the next room and waited for them to chat. I heard footsteps walk into the office, finally! I heard mumbling and then Everett was talking. It was rude to snoop but I couldn't help it I had to know! I'll ask him about it after the session anyways and it'll be like I never was listening. I edged myself along the wall until I was centimeters away from the door. Then I pressed my ear close,
"Are you taking your medications I prescribed?" My dad asked
"Yes," Everett replied
"Did you have any issues, side affects?"
"Well yeah actually, I couldn't sleep."
I didn't need to know this, I sat down on the floor and waited for the subject to change. After a few minutes I heard laughter, I peeked my head around the corner and saw Everett lean forward. He said seriously,
"I was afraid my big dick wouldn't work, that's why I didn't take the meds. I was afraid it wouldn't work because I met someone."
At this point half my face was poking out from the door and my hands were wrapped around the frame. I was staring directly at Everett and he met my eyes. Oh shoot! I ducted around the corner and back into the room. I heard some more mumbling and then Everett turned the corner,
"Hi, Hazel."
I stepped out from the shadowy room,
"Hi."
I was so scared that he would mention me spying on him that I didn't know what to say.
"Come on, let's go," Everett said while walking up the stairs. I followed him even though it was my house. He walked into my bedroom and sat on the floor like we used to. He extended his hand to me and I put mine in his, then I sat down next to him.
"You we're watching me, today, in your dad's office. I saw you."
"Oh, yeah. I'm sorry about that. I just wanted answers."
"Answers to what?"
"Like, why are you seeing my dad?"
"Don't ask questions you already know the answer to, you're smarter then that."
"Sorry."
I didn't want to question him further or upset him so I just let it be. I felt his hand squeeze mine and then he scooted closer to me. I rested my head in the crook of his neck and sighed. He looked at me and slid his hand to my forehead, pushing back a strand of hair. Then he kissed my forehead and laid his head atop mine. We sat like that for a while until I heard footsteps coming down the hall. I removed myself from Everett and slid away from him. The door opened and my dad was standing there,
"Hazel have you been in my... Everett?"
"Dad, I.."
"What is he doing in here?! Everett this is beyond inappropriate for you to be in my house after hours with my daughter, I am asking you to leave.. now!"
"What is that you think I'm afraid of? Fear of rejection?" Everett yelled as he fled from the room.
I heard him storm down the steps. When he yelled that last sentence I could feel the rage in his tone and the flicker in his eyes. For a second I feared him, but then I was angry at my father.
"Why did you do that! We were just hanging out!"
"I don't want you hanging out with him, he's dangerous Hazel!"
"No he isn't! He saved me!"
"Listen to me Hazel, I don't want to see you hanging around him again, are we clear?"
"Whatever," I grumbled.
"I said are we clear?!"
"Fine!" I yelled.
He slammed my door shut leaving me alone and I felt tears stream down my cheeks. My face was burning and red and my eyes puffy and wet. He was the monster, not Everett. He's done far worse then Everett anyhow. How dare he call Everett dangerous! I slumped into a pile and daydreamed of Everett, and not how my dad pictures him. I dreamed of how I picture him. Everett to me was a shy boy with the urge to protect those who are close to him. He was caring and he listened. He was not a monster.
