The joy of the holidays.. Specifically Christmas... Everyone running around shopping and buying presents for family, friends, and their significant others... The jingle jangle of bells in front of stores, the cheery music, and my favorite, holiday baking and cooking. Every year since I had moved out of my moms house, I would go back just for Christmas, and we would both be in the kitchen, bustling about, baking cookies, fudge, and all of the Christmas goodies you could imagine. Of course that wasn't my only favorite part about the holidays, I had taken a liking to helping my mom set up her Christmas tree and then decorate it with the ornaments I remembered so well. Each ornament that belonged to a child in the family, had a special memory behind it.
This year, things would be much different for us. This year it would just be mom, auntie, and me. Dad had been having an affair with some other woman, much richer than mom, and when mom found out, it was NOT pretty. Needless to say, dad was no longer a part of the family, but we somehow all managed to crack a smile. Mom was a strong woman, she rarely cried, rarely complained, and rarely argued with anyone. She was a really laid back mother, which was why most of my friends thought of her as a second mother.
I found myself standing on my mothers doorstep, snow gently falling down like sprinkles on a cupcake. The ground was already covered with the soft powder, and you could just smell the crispness in the air. It was definitely winter, and I was ready. I grabbed the latch and gently smacked it against the door three times, before stepping back and hiding half of my face in my puffy insulated jacket. I leaned forward on my tippy toes and then leaned back onto the heels of my feet, repeating the process for a little while. My pattern faltered when I heard the sound of the knob turning. The door opened and there stood my mother, her frizzy hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, her eyes full of joy and excitement.
"Y/N! It's so nice to see you sweetie!" She exclaimed, smiling wide. She held her arms out and I immediately went in for a hug. Her embrace wasn't so tight, seeing as she was a gentle woman. Honestly.. I was used to my dad greeting me at the door, I was used to his strong arms slithering around my frail form, embracing me with such masculinity that it made me feel safe and sound.
"The trip up here was a little risky, but I'm so glad I made it." I smiled gently. Once the hug was broken, she simply put her hands on my shoulders and gave me a peck on both cheeks before pulling back and gazing into my eyes.
"God, you remind me so much of your father... Sad, things happened the way they did, he sure would be happy to see you right now." She half smiled, before staring behind me real quick. "Come now, don't want you freezing out here." She chuckled, gesturing for me to come in so she could close the door. A giggle emitted from my mouth and I rushed inside, smirking when I saw auntie sitting in her usual spot. The rocking chair by the fireplace.
Auntie was a much older woman than my mother was. Her hair was much more gray, but it blended well with her dull hair color. Her eyes were less vibrant, but still shined with that blissful excitement. When she saw me, she stood up and slowly walked towards mom and I, only really admiring how grown I was. When she finally got to me, she embraced me and let out a wail. "Oh, I'm getting old! Look at how much my niece has grown!" She cried, rubbing my back and patting it slightly. I smiled warmly and rubbed her back gently.

Christmas tunes, from older to newer, blasted through the household as mom and I were baking all sorts of goodies in the kitchen. I grabbed the pan of cookies I had made and bent over to put them in the oven, looking over at my mom who was busy making fudge brownies. My face lit up in excitement when she turned around and dusted her hands of all the excess powdered sugar. "We're out of powdered sugar, I had a bit of a mishap." She chuckled, going to the sink to rinse off her hands. I rolled my eyes jokingly and smiled.
