“Don’t run away from me, please stay I need you!” Sarah cried out through broken sobs though it was like no one heard her, she felt like she was invisible. “Who could possibly love someone like her?” Those words played in her mind over and over. Sarah was told from a young age she was incapable of being loved, she grew up believing it. Sarah is a sophomore at Lawrence Arts Academy High School in New York city, she loved her school it was her escape from her home, well she hardly calls it a home. To Sarah, that house is just four walls and a place to sleep. Sarah grew up in foster care, jumping from place to place for years. She was finally put in a permanent home at the age of fourteen. The house was a disaster zone, Sarah was physically and mentally abused almost daily, she has bruises and scars all over her body. Sarah hides her pain well. She puts on a smile everyday just to keep others from asking her if she’s okay. She has friends but she doesn’t let them in, even though they tried she won’t let them too close. Sarah is afraid if she lets anyone get close they’ll leave her. Shes let it happen too many times, she’s tired of being hurt. Sarah wants someone to love her for who she is, but she doubts anyone would want to be with her. Until the day Sarah found a note on her locker. Sarah has gotten so many hateful notes, she thought this was just another one. She crumbled up the paper and shoved it into her pocket. She dragged her feet all the way home, once Sarah was home she opened the door to find her foster dad passed out on the couch with what appeared to be beer in his hand. She sighed and went up to her room, she collapsed to her bed exhausted from the day. After a few minutes, Sarah sat up she went into her pocket and took out the piece of paper still crumbled up. She unfolded the paper and read it, what she thought was going to be a rude massage was actually one of great kindness. The note read, “Hey you don’t know me, but I know you and I think you’re beautiful.” -Jake. Sarah did know who Jake was he is in her fifth period math class. She couldn’t believe what she just read, How could someone as handsome as Jake write her a note like this? Sarah thought this all was just a joke, so she threw the note in the trash. The next day in school, the bell for fifth period rang Sarah walked to her class and made her way to the back of the room, she slumped down in her chair not wanting to be seen. Sarah saw Jake come into the room from the coroner of her eye, she tried to hide her smile but she knew that note was only a joke and she wasn’t good enough for Jake. What happened next surprised Sarah, Jake is walking towards her. He found the seat next to her and sat down. Jake gave her a nervous smile and asked “Did you get my note?” Sarah’s eyes widened “It wasn’t a joke?” She thought to herself. She returned his gaze and said “Yes.” Jake grabbed Sarah’s hand she flinched under his touch, but soon relaxed because of how gentle he was. “I meant what I said, you’re beautiful Sarah.” Her face turned a bright crimson as she said, “You mean that really?” no one has ever said anything like this to Sarah, she didn’t know what to say she was lost in his words. The teacher took Sarah out of her trance “Are you alive over there Sarah?” Her head shot up “Huh what oh yeah I’m here.” Sarah blurted out with a weak smile. The teacher rolled his eyes and continued teaching, other kids around her started snickering. Jake saw this, he couldn’t stand it “Leave her alone!” he called out. The room got quiet Sarah was once again surprised at Jake sticking up for her “What’s his angle?” she pondered. Sarah still didn’t understand, she didn’t see it, she so desperately wanted to believe it but she couldn’t. After class Sarah went to her locker to put her books away, Jake followed quietly behind her. Sarah turned around to see Jake standing behind her, she jumps back startled. “Don’t do that.” she says in a low whisper, Jake apologizes “I can see the doubt in your eyes.” he says Sarah didn’t say anything she just stared at Jake frozen in her place. “I know you don’t believe me, you think I’m playing a mind game on you, but I’m not I care about you and I want to be with you.” “You don’t know me.” Sarah said in barely a whisper “I know enough about you to know you need someone to love you right.” Jake said confidently. Sarah is at a loss for words she knows he’s right but how? “How do you know so much about me?” Sarah asks Jake raises an eyebrow “You don’t remember me do you?” Jake questions “What do you mean?” Sarah asks. Jake sighs “You were a foster kid at my house when we were younger.” Sarah remembered now she put a hand over her mouth Sarah hadn’t seen Jake in years. Jakes house was her first foster home it was the only one she loved, she was happy there but the social worker took her away from them. She didn’t realize it until now, Jake was the boy who looked out for Sarah when she was in her first foster home she never got a chance to know his name she left so quick. Jake put his arms around Sarah bringing her into his embrace. Sarah’s heart started beating rapidly she enjoyed his warmth. She didn’t want to let him go not again, Sarah’s grip tightened around Jake “I’m not letting you go not this time.” Sarah said through tears. Jake smiled and kissed Sarah on top of her head then said, “I’m not going anywhere, not unless you’re with me.” in that moment Jake and Sarah were inseparable and that is how it stayed.
