I went back to Ashton’s house the next day to fulfill my promise to help him pack that I had broken to spend with that dick I call my ex. Thankfully the previous night I had cried out all my tears with Ashton and it was just replaced by anger. I destroyed everything he gave me, deleted his contact, text messages, and pictures of us on my phone. Oh, and before I did all that, I told him to go fuck himself. The satisfaction was unlike anything else.

I walked into his house since I practically live there and went straight up to his room to find him packing a suitcase.

“I can’t believe you’re leaving in two days.” I sighed, standing next to him and folding a pair of his jeans he’d been struggling with for him, and I set them on the pile of his clothes in his suitcase.

“Me neither.” He shook his head.

“I know you promised you’d visit, but you don’t have to.”

“What are you talking about? Of course I’m gonna visit.” He nudged my arm with his elbow as we fold and stack his clothes.

“I know you’re gonna visit your family and stuff, but you’re gonna be so busy. We might not see you for months! I just want you to focus on doing what you love and not worrying about us over here.” I shrugged one shoulder lazily.

“You’re talking crazy, Bri. Come here.” He pulled my hand and tugged me to sit on an open spot on his bed with him.

“I always worry about you, even when you’re five houses down the street. You’re younger than me and I always want you to be safe because I love you.”

“Hey, I am only younger than you by five days!” I defended and we laughed quietly. “And I love you too. But honestly, don’t worry about us, or me. I’ll be fine.” I struggled to believe my own words. I wanted to ‘accidentally’ throw his suitcase on the floor so all his clothes spilt out and then hide everything, but I knew I couldn’t do that.

“I won’t forget about you, if that’s what you’re thinking.” He looked at me with so much seriousness.

“Please don’t.” I whimpered, throwing my arms around his neck and hugging him close to me.

“Dammit, I thought I was out of tears!” I cursed, pulling away and embarrassingly wiping my eyes.

“It’s okay to cry.”

“No, I want to be fine. I want to tell you I’m okay with you leaving. I want to tell you not to worry about me, but I’m just not that strong.” I had never admitted such a weakness. I was always hard-headed, stubborn as hell and so headstrong.

“Hey, stop that.” He gently scolded me and I looked into his wide eyes that were shining a green color at me because of the light. “I will do everything in my power to make sure that you are fine whilst I’m gone. It will be like I’m not even gone.”

“You can’t make that happen, Ash.” I shook my head then rested it on his shoulder.

“I can damn well try. You’ll be okay, Bri.”

“I hope so.” I sighed.

I pulled myself together enough to help him finish packing a suitcase and backpack, and restrained myself from dumping everything out on the floor on ‘accident’.

The big day had come. The boys would be leaving for London that day, in just a few hours. I, as well as their families and Ashton’s girlfriend, went to the airport to say goodbye. I never thought I’d have to say goodbye to my best friend. We always promised, ‘together forever, even when we’re married’. It was real to us, even when we were seven and made that promise.

“Flight forty two B to London, England departing in ten minutes.” I heard the announcement, breaking me out of my zombie-like daze I had been in while following the boys through the airport.

“We should get on the plane now.” Luke sadly said and the boys got their suitcases and bags ready, turning to me. I hadn’t cried yet, surprised with myself. I bet they expected me to be sobbing at their feet by now; hell, I even half-expected it.

Their families said their goodbyes, shedding some tears and I fought back tears as I watched Harry and Lauren start to cry as they hugged their older brother.

“I love you.” Jasmine told Ashton after they hugged and I was consoling Harry. I looked up when Harry attacked me in a tight hug, seeing tears in her perfectly blue eyes.

“I love you too.” Ashton responded, pulling her into a kiss and I forced my eyes to look back at the blonde little boy still hugging me with his little arms. The wound from my horrible breakup was still fresh and I didn’t really enjoy seeing a couple happily in love like I used to be.

Jasmine steps away from Ashton, full-on sobbing now and she stands by Ashton’s mum to cry with her on her shoulder.

“Give me one second, Harry.” I whisper to the little boy, gently prying him off me. He sniffles and I stand to my full height, approaching Ashton.

I just couldn’t leave yet, but I knew I had to and he had to as well.

“Are you going to be okay?” Ashton asked me, holding me at arm’s length.

“I think so, yeah.”

“Me first!” Michael said, pushing Ashton out of the way and wrapping his arms around me and I smiled, moving through Luke and Calum, giving them words of ‘good luck’ and ‘I’ll miss you’ before I had to move to the goodbye I never saw coming. Ashton’s arms encircled me protectively and that’s when I let it all out. The dam I had built since that morning when I woke up with dry eyes had cracked and the water spilled out quickly, leaving me in sobs.

“Dammit, I was hoping you wouldn’t cry.” Ashton whined while hugging me tighter. “I’ll be back, I swear I will. And if I have to buy you a ticket to London, then I will.”

“I’m just going to miss you.” I croaked, burying my face into one of his favorite bands’ t-shirts he was wearing.

“I’ll miss you more.” He whispered and we reluctantly parted. “I’ll call you as soon as I land.”

“Please be safe.” I wiped my nose.

“I will.”

“I wish you the best of luck in everything that you do. You’ll go far, I’m sure of it.” I said to him honestly and he looked like he was going to cry. If he cried, all hell would break loose; I’d fall to my knees and clutch onto his leg like a child and beg him to stay if he even shed one single tear.

“Love you.”

“Love you too.” I smiled. “Together…”

He grinned, knowing what I was talking about, “Forever.”

“Even when we’re married?” I smiled through my tears.

“Even when we’re married.” He gave me one last big hug while the announcement was made that the flight would be leaving in five minutes.

I watched with the waterworks streaming while they walked through the walkway to get on the plane. Ashton turned around and waved at me with that adorable smile he’s had since he was a kid. I waved back and then, they closed the plane doors, and I had never felt so alone than that moment when the only person I’d had an unbreakable bond with left for all these years.
