Prologue

The wind was almost as cold and merciless as the voices that rang out behind the elf-king as he shut the balcony door and hurried through the busy corridor to the nursery chamber.

He swung the doors open with a strength that seemed it shouldn't belong to his lithe body, to reveal those most dear to him; his family.

His wife, Titania, stood in the corner of the room readying a small sack for her journey. His son was eerily calm as he surveyed the battle below through the window he stood by. The elf-king closed the double doors behind him and quicky, but gracefully walked over to where Titania had swung the sack over he shoulder and now proceded to pick up their daughter from where she sat on the floor.

"Cameron," he said, "hurry and get the guardian and Garrik." His son nodded and silently slipped from the room. The elf-king waited until he heard Cameron's footsteps retreating down the hallway to turn to his precious girls, to find Titania was already looking at him with sadness and pain in her brilliant green eyes.

"You'll be alright." he said reasurringly. She stepped closer and said, "It's not me I'm worried about." He glanced down at her arms to where their daughter lay silently staring up at him with a wise look in her eyes.

She looked around five in human years, though he knew she was almost twenty, which let him to believe that the prophecy was based on human years.

He looked back up to his beautiful wife, and pushed a strand of golden blonde hair from her face. "She is strong, and with the guardian and you, sh-" "I'm not worried about her either." Titania said with a small smile on her lips.

The elf-king nodded, understanding what she was saying. " I will see you again, I promise." he said, " I will keep myself and Cameron safe."

"I don't want to leave you." she whispered. "Or I, you," he told her, "but we must keep her safe, and this is the only way since the Drow found out about the prophecy."

He wiped a tear off her cheek, and said, " This is not goodbye for forever, love." He pulled her into a kiss as the doors to the chamber opened. The two royal elves broke apart and turned to where Cameron stood with a young elven child who looked to be his daughter's age, and Garrik, the elf-king's advisor and friend.

Garrik glided over to where they were standing and looked at the royals with a question in his eyes. Titania nodded and motioned for him to continue with the process. Garrik reached down into her arms where their daughter lay, the cause of the commotion outside the palace.

He continued to place his hand on either side of the elf-child's temples. The elf-king had to look away from her knowing, deep blue eyes, already regretting what was about to happen. Wiping her memory was something that had to be done to ensure her safety in case the Drow tracked her. She didn't fully know how to shield her thoughts yet.

Garrik lifted his hands and stepped back from the now sleeping elf-child. " It is done." The elf-king nodded, " And the guardian?" he asked, glancing to where she stood by Cameron. " Her powers will fully be in when she in fourteen, in human years." Garrik replied.

He thanked him, then motioned for her to come closer. Speeding up the process of an elf's powers was looked down upon, but a nessesity since she was to help guard his daughter when she returned home.

She came to stand by Titania's side and took her free hand when she shifted to put their daughter against her chest. The cries outside grew louder and Garrik said, " It is time, my queen, you must go." Titania looked from her daughter to Garrik and said, " Draw the portal."

He bowed and went to the other side of the room where he began to weave the door. Cameron walked from where he had been silently standing and grabbed onto his father's hand. Together the group walked in silence toward the shimmering cloud of air which expanded out to reveal a dark forest.

Right before the entrance, they stopped and turned to face one another. The elf-king pulled his family into an embrace, and with a great sadness, pulled back. His queen gave Garrik a kiss on the cheek,  then turned back to look at her family.

She looked as if she was about to say something, but the elf-king just looked at her and said, " I love you too."

She smiled, and with one last glance, she took the guardian's hand again, tightened her grip on her daughter, and stepped into the portal, feeling her heart break as she left half of it, and everything she had ever known behind.
