it had been half an hour since Millie had been sitting alone. half an hour.
the waitress kept coming back, same question each time, "are you ready to take your order sweatpea?"
Millie would look up with glossy eyes each time, "no, he uh, should be here soon." and smiled.
the waitress would nod and continue to fill up her lemonade while she waited. Millie had already gone through five.
she didn't know if her having to go to the bathroom so much was her feeling anxious or all the lemonade.
she hoped it was the lemonade.
Millie was dressed up nicely, in a nice floral skirt and a tight black tank top with a matching floral jacket, simple but rosy makeup, and nicely curled hair.
she had planned this date with her boyfriend for two weeks, a nice dinner out by the beach, but after forty five minutes she knew that she had been stood up.
she had never really trusted her boyfriend, she had always felt he was unreliable, but nevertheless she loved him.
Millie learned after now, forty five minutes, he didn't love her.
she knew he wasn't stuck in traffic or stuck at work, no, she knew that he was becoming scarily close with a cute blonde girl at work and he was probably with her at some bar right now.
the waitress came over, once again, this time to say "more lemonade sweet pea?" and a pity smile.
Millie had looked up, this time her eyes closest to leaking it had been all night and said, "I️ think I️ might just have to pass this time." with a plastered fake smile.
the waitress nodded and walked away, not even bothering to ask if she wanted the check for the five lemonades, or even to ask if she was alright, she just took her happy dark red heels and click clacked away.
Millie was ready to leave when she finally wiped her face, now littered with tears, when a cute boy with curly brown hair and a face lightly scattered with freckles popped on over and said,
"oh babe ! I'm so sorry traffic was crazy!" and sat down. she had never seen this boy in her life, but he was cute.
he leaned in and quietly whispered "I'm finn, just go with it. whoever did this to you is a jerk." and leaned back and smiled.
Millie was astonished that some (attractive) stranger would come up and rescue her from a sad excuse of a boyfriend.
she leaned in too and whispered back, "I'm millie, you are a real hero." and wiped her face clean of the last fallen tear and smiled genuine for the first time that night.
- after the date
"thank you, really." Mille held her jacket over her shoulders, smiling brightly at the boy who she learned went by the name of Finn Wolfhard (an intriguing name if you asked her) and was truly grateful for his kindness.
"no problem millster." he laughed off, hoping to lighten up the mood a tiny bit more.
"mmmm yeah don't call me that." she laughed, realizing how much she actually liked this boy.
"now how about this time I️ take you on a real date, one where I'm not in a flannel and jeans. I️ promise I'll actually show up." he smiled shoving his hands in his pocket, he really liked millie after having a whole dinner date with her.
"I️ would love that finnlard." she smiled leaning in, as he did the same.
both leaning in, right before they made contact, he whispered "your the only one who can call me that," and sealed the night with a kiss.
