Eleven years ago

The setting sun had turned the clouds into a beautiful orange. It was beginning to get colder, so my babysitter wanted me in the house in five minutes. Being the little brat I was, I sulk and threw a tantrum.

"But we're going home tomorrow. Why can't I play more?" I asked in that pouty voice I reserved for adults who didn't let me do what I wanted. I also puffed up my cheeks so that adults couldn't resist me.

"Because it's dark. You wouldn't want monsters to come and snatch you away, would you?" Janet tried to tell me patiently.

"There's no such thing as monsters," I mumbled. Inwardly, I was a little scared, but I was sure he would protect me. "Stop lying to me."

Janet looked as if she wanted to pull me into the house forcefully. "Now, now. Be a good girl and join your brother," she spoke coaxingly.

Woman, that would not work on me.

"Ji Hun can be a goody-two shoes if he wants to," I told her. "We're twins but I'm not supposed to follow whatever he's doing." I glanced at the sky, afraid that the sun might set soon and monsters would really come out and get me. I waved at her, charging towards the woods nearby. "He's waiting for me. Bye!"

My babysitter sighed in resignation and yelled, "Be back in ten or I'll tell your mother!"

I winced in reflex, recalling how moody my mother was these days. It was probably because of her being sick all the time but my young mind didn't understand why an illness would make someone so hot-tempered. All my thoughts were pushed aside however, the very moment I laid my brown eyes on a figure a short distance away.

"Coco!" I ran up to a boy who was just a few years older than I am. Panting, I look over at him. Someone who is older always seemed so cool, I thought to myself. I can't wait to grow up.

"Hyojin...why are you still calling me that?" Coco scratched the back of his head awkwardly. I vaguely remembered that he was drinking cola when we first met, and I had been calling him that for a month now. "You still can't remember my name?"

Uh oh. Caught red handed. I laughed hoarsely and changed the subject. "I will be flying back to Seoul tomorrow," I told him, getting a little teary-eyed. We only knew each other for a short while, but we got along really well. I really didn't want to go back to South Korea without Coco. I didn't want to lose the only friend I had. The thought made my vision blurred.

His smile spread across his face but it looked sad. "We will meet again," he promised. "As long as we have the same dream." He patted my head. His hand felt warm and comforting, and I began to relax.

I quickly wiped away my tears. "Of course," I giggled. "As long as we have the same dream.
