Tense: a tense is a word that gives information about the time and state of a particular action.

Eg: She ate a pizza.

From this sentence, you can deduce that she ate a pizza, and has finished doing so sometime in the past, maybe for lunch, yesterday or even last year!
But certainly not now or anytime in the future.

But can you do so without the verb?
Let's see

She ___ a pizza.

Not only is this sentence incomplete, a phrase, but also leaves the reader clueless about the relation between the Subject and object, the sentence ceases to make sense.

If verbs are important, why tenses?
Let's see

She eat a pizza.

Does this make sense?No.
Now even though this sentence is gramatically complete, it does not make sense. The root verb alone cannot satisfy the sense required.

To compliment a root verb, certain extentions are added or variations are made to the root verb with respect to the time and state of the action(verb).

These produce the tense form.

Tenses can be classified into 3 main types with respect to time.

=》 Past
=》 Present
=》 Future

Tenses can be classified into 5 main types with respect to state.

=》Simple
=》Contineous
=》 Participle
=》 Perfect
=》 Perfect contineous

We will learn about all of these in the following chapters.
