Chapter 1:
Everything Must Change
• • •
My sister woke up with a new face and body, but she still retained her old mind. She has
the memories. She had the same way of looking at me with one eyebrow cocked up, like
she was about to question me. "So, how do I look," my sister Rory asked. She looked
absolutely beautiful and completely different. Her new, scarlet hair gently flowed down
her back like a mesmerizing sea of red. This was much different than the midnight black
bob she once had. Her new eyes had a brighter tone. It made her look happier. She
grew a couple inches taller and lost a lot of weight. Her change was a complete success.
"You look incredible. Have a look," I responded as I led her toward our mirror.
I wanted what she had ... or did I? I'd decide tomorrow. Tomorrow, like my sister has, I
will have to choose. They will give me a choice to change my body or my mind. There
are exceptions to the change. If a person changes their body, they keep the same gender,
but all their other features have to change. If they chose to change their mind, they
would keep the basic memories: their name, their family, and most common
knowledge. Their intelligence, the past memories of their background, and their
personalities would all change. I have to choose to change my appearance and how
people will see me, or the thoughts and memories that make me who I am. I was forced
to choose one or the other.
Refusing this 'gift' wasn't an option. I regret neglecting this decision. The year we
awaited our change was random. They told us if we were ready to be modified at the
beginning of that year. I always dreaded the year my sister and I would have to be
different.
