I ran behind a door and slammed it shut as fast as I could, almost tearing off the loose, rusting door handle. I could hear them all marching outside, each one's banging footsteps growing farther apart. Freddy was the farthest away. Chica wasn't far down the right hall but nearly to the bedroom. I heard Foxy settling back in the closet. But Bonnie... he was the one I couldn't distinguish. His footsteps had fallen silent, yet I could still hear the pounding of metal feet and the whirring of gears in my head. I slowly turned around, not sure why, and I pressed my body to the door; he was right in front of me, his bright, red eyes staring directly into mine.
I was sitting at my desk set up against the wall, working on my homework for the day. It was algebra as per usual. Most of my homework was always that, although my teacher liked to throw english and robotics into the mix. I rarely ever do history or science. I guess my parents must want me to be really good at math, despite me barely knowing the material even though I'm 17.
I don't have many friends since my mom doesn't let me go out much. The ones that I do have, I met them online. They're nice and all, but we just don't talk much. It's been a few months since I last actually had a decent conversation with them. I've seen some of the things they do, or at least Lilly, because she likes to post videos on Instagram all the time. Michael doesn't do much of anything on there. I'm not even sure he still has his account.
"Jane, time for dinner! And don't forget to bring your work down with you!" My Mom was downstairs in the dining room setting the table.
"Okay!" I yelled down to her. I grabbed my papers and stacked them neatly in order of subject. I went downstairs quickly, making sure I didn't drop any of my papers. When I got downstairs, I noticed that my brother wasn't at the table. 'He's probably upstairs playing that stupid game of his.'
I sat down at the table with my mom and dad and began eating. My parents were quieter than usual. It was unsettling, even for how quiet our house usually is. After we finished eating our dinner, my mom looked up at me from her plate.
"So, did you get all your work done?"
"Mhm," I said, still chewing a few remnants of the food left in my mouth. I set my fork on my plate and held my papers out to her. She took them from my hand a little hesitantly and started looking through my papers slowly.
"Good job, honey. You can go out tomorrow if you want. Mr. Moor said that he doesn't have any work planned for you tomorrow."
"Alright. Thanks, mom." I got up and started walking to the stairs. When I knew I was out of my parents' line of sight, I bolted up the stairs. I shut the door and sat down on my bed with my laptop. I opened up Skype, clicked on George's account, and hovered the mouse over the call button. Something was holding me back from clicking it. I just kept the mouse hovering over the button. Suddenly, the screen went to the pre-call screen. I clicked 'accept' hesitantly and saw that it was George.
"Hey, Jane. How've you been?"
"I've been good. Didn't expect you to call me. Why'd you call anyway?"
"Well, I was wondering if you wanted to go out somewhere, like on a date. We haven't gone on one since you started being homeschooled." I felt a pang in my heart and I saw the expression on his face contort into one that looked worried. "Jane, are you okay?"
"Y-yeah. I just kind of... forgot, I guess..." My voice was trailing off and I noticed that I had been fumbling with my hands. George's face changed to one of sympathy.
"It's alright. I can understand why. It must be hard not being able to get out much, especially since you always have so much work."
"Wait, how do you know about that?"
"I've been coming over to your house trying to get you to come outside at night. Every time I would come over, you-"
"Hold on, I'll be right back." My parents were talking in a hushed tone but I could still hear them. I opened my door quietly and went to the top of the steps.
"We can't tell her. It'll break her heart." My mom's voice was shaky and I could hear that she was about to burst into tears any second.
"I know, I know. We have to, though. We've been hiding it from her all day. We need to tell her that James is missing."
My face had one of mixed emotions. I was sad, frustrated, and scared at the same time. I went to my room and noticed that George had hung up. As soon as I was picking up my laptop to throw it at the wall, I heard a small rock hit my window. I looked outside and saw George standing there, waving his arms. I opened the window and climbed down a ladder I always had set against the house. When I got down, I ran to him and flung my arms around him, sobbing into his neck.
"Jane? What's wrong?" He gently stroked my hair, trying to calm me down.
"It's my brother. H-he's gone missing." My voice was even shakier than my mother's when I heard her talking to my dad. George kept stroking my hair as I held onto him tightly.
"It'll be okay. We'll find him." He held me close and lifted my head so that I was looking into his eyes. "Go get some of your things together. We're going now."
"Ok." I climbed back up the ladder and grabbed a duffle bag from my closet. I put my laptop in the bag and then started shoving clothes inside it. I grabbed my phone off another desk that my laptop is usually set on. I grabbed a portable charger and my usb cable then threw them into the bag. I walked downstairs and saw that my parents had fallen asleep in each other's arms. I went to the kitchen and started stuffing snacks like pop tarts, honey buns, and granola bars in it. When I was finished, I went back up to my room and climbed outside the window again.
"You ready?"
"Mhm," I said while patting the bag.
"Alright, let's go." He held my hand as we walked to his car.
